IGen – The New Growing Generation Of People

A group of individuals that were born between the mid-1990s to the early 2000s are starting to make their presence known. IGen, a generation of highly intelligent, driven, and motivated people are beginning to show up everywhere counting for twenty-five percent of the US population. New York Times writer Laura Pappano share with us her input of Generation ‘Z’ or better known as iGen. The article not only reminds but put in perspective that the iGen has grown up in an era where school shootings happen every couple of months.

Now Kelly McGonigal, TED Talk speaker tries to help us learn that stress is most harmful when we think it is harmful to your own examination of this negative claim. It would have been much better for the psychological health of the iGen had they not they grown up when active shooter drills became routine. We can lament this reality or reframe it. I’m not looking for you to find the “silver lining” in a disadvantage or unwanted circumstance.

While the norm of active shootings today’s generation makes many of them more aware to the events happening on around them, this is not a trait that can or should be normal in society. These observant people have the most stress to live with and it is not always so easy.

IGen is a group of individuals that grew up around many events. They have experienced or even seen the effects of many tragic times in our society. IGen have always been around changing and advancing technology.

During their time, there has been changes not only in technology but also research and medicine and development. With a contestant view of life and the world around constantly changing iGen have always been pushed to work as hard as they can and strive to be the very best. With that being said, iGen is a group of people that have been underestimated. Older generations fear ‘to give them the key to the city’ and let them be in control of the world. They are seen as the lost generation, a generation that is unaware, and behind on current news. As all these assumptions are false, iGen has something to offer that other generations do not.

iGen is very aware of their surroundings and what is going on around them. They not alone know the top trends but also who is starting them and what most people think about it. This is a very beneficial thing because it can help big businesses and workforces. "They are a frugal but ambitious lot, less excited by climbing walls and en suite kitchens than by career development.” We have the ability to multitask whether it is working with a group of people or working only, iGen is a hard-working group that is continuously striving to be the best and work hard toward their future and make a better future for others. Although, it might seem like they got it all under control, always working to be the best isn't always easy. The stress of it being their turn now to take over, bring upon pressure can overwhelm one person, let alone an entire generation of kids and young adults that is dedicated to working vigorously. The unfathomable events that this large group has faced is an obstacle hard to understand. Since they can remember growing and going to school where they had to periodically have safety precautions put into play, that ensured that students would not be harmed in case of an emergency was normal to them. They have been encountered with the most school shootings seen than past generations causing them to be very cautious and weary.

Children’s shows and movies are one of the many places that young children gain their knowledge from. Shows like Elmo, Barney and Teletubbies were probably the most watched kids shows that iGen watched growing up, all which always had moral teachings that they shared with the kids watching. ‘Sharing is caring’ or ‘always be nice to others’ are some of the messages that we have known since infants. Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood is also one that some might remember, with the iconic Fred McFeely Rogers as Mr. Rogers. Fred Rogers said in The World According to Mister Rogers: Important Things to Remember, “In times of stress, the best thing we can do for each other is to listen with our ears and our hearts and to be assured that our questions are just as important as our answers.” Now not everyone probably watched or knows who Mr. Rogers is but his message is a good one to think about from time to time. We should be kind to each other no matter who we are, what we look like or what we might be going through. Just a simple “Hello” could change someone's entire day.
