Characters that influence or contributed to the good and the bad interactions in the book was Eva, who killed her son plum by burning him up in a fire, leaving her kids, and being unable to save her daughter, Hannah from a fire. Also, another important character in the book is Sula, who is the daughter of Hannah and the granddaughter of Eva. Sula contributing to the death of Chicken Little, watching her mom die, sleeping with people’s husband and threatening her grandma conveys the bad image that she has in the book.

Toni Morrison's novel, Sula uses the duality of good and bad to connote the importance of stereotypes and, when it is not fulfilled , society considers you as an outsider and a disgrace.

Morrison intended to connote the bad intentions of Sula to convey the horrible actions that Sua commited. “ Sula was probably struck dumb, as anybody would be who saw her own momma burn up. Eva said yes, but inside she disagreed and remained convinced that sula had watched Hannah burn not because she was paralyzed, but because she was interested.

”. This piece of Evidence shows that Sula just sitting there watching her own mom struggle to stay alive even though she is burning up in the fire connotes the evilness of Sula. For humans, It would be completely natural for us to save and protect our families, especially, our mom; so Sula just finding enjoyment just to see her mom suffer isn’t normal. “ She was pariah, then, and knew it.

Knew that they despised her and believed that they framed their hatred as disgust for the easy way she lay with men. Which was true. She went to bed with men as frequently as she could.”. This piece of Evidence shows that sula not settling down to find a husband and have kids, revels the stereotypical boundaries of a women that sula doesn’t have and doesn’t believe in. Sula would rather sleep with many men than finding a guy that’s right for her because she grew up not understanding the importance of having a family since her own is dysfunctional. Morris intended to connote the good intentions of Sula to convey how Sula’s action influenced the good of the town and her future self. “ Tell me about it. The big city. Big is all it is. A big Medallion. No. I mean the life. The nightclubs, and parties… I was in college, Nellis. No nightclubs on campus.”.

This piece of Evidence shows that Sula coming back after leaving and getting her education for 10 years shows what Sula really values, and that is being her own person. As a black women, she isn’t expected to do so since, women during this time are known only to take care of their kids and husband. “ Then she realized, or rather she sensed, that there was not going to be any pain. She was not breathing because she didn’t have to. Her body did not need oxygen. She was dead. Sula felt her face smiling. Well, I’ll be damned, She thought, it didn’t hurt. Wait’ll I tell Nell.”. This piece of Evidence shows the feelings and thoughts that Sula had in her head when she was dying. The fact that Sula thought about Nel and how she realizes that death isn’t painful shows the childhood memories that she had with Nel, her best friend and the deaths that she witnessed in the past.

The duality of good and bad conveys the message of death and life. “ Their conviction of Sula’s evil changed them in accountable yet mysterious ways. Once the source of their personal misfortune was identified, they had leave to protect and love one another.” This piece of Evidence shows that the town having that same opinion and hatred for Sula shows the bond that the town has created. This has made the town better by communicating with one another and loving their families, which is the complete opposite of Sula. “ The presence of evil was something to be first recognized, then dealt with, survived, outwitted, triumphed over.” This piece of Evidence shows the journey that Sula had throughout the book. Sula is known for doing evil spirited actions and not having any type of emotion or feelings about it but, at the end of the day, Sula is a hardworking women that deserves credit with how far she has come to be committed to what she wanted to do and that was to get her education.

“ In that place, where they tore the nightshade and blackberry patches from their roots to make room for the Medallion City Golf Course, there was once a neighborhood.”. This piece of Evidence shows that the town from the start had good and bad intentions and things. The “ nightshade” symbolises poison which connects back to evil and, “blackberry” symbolises a fruit the is sweet, so it refers back to the good things about the city of medallion. This part was important because Morrison intended to put this piece of evidence as the first line of the book to connote the mixture of good and bad that comes out from Medallion. In Conclusion, Toni Morrison's novel, Sula uses the duality of good and bad to connote the importance of stereotypes and, when it is not fulfilled , society considers you as an outsider and a disgrace.
