Fruits of American Education

Categories: Education

As education trends in the United States keep following a downwards tendency, many ideas for education reform have been put forward. Every few years a new politician pushes through a bill that will turn the next batch of the students into policy guinea pigs. The radical thought, one oppressed by many, is that the students are not at fault here, and we do not need to lower our academic standards. Instead, some believe we must look closely at our administrative system, and at how we treat our teachers for the fault in our education system.

One of these ideas, based on a correlation between teacher job satisfaction and teacher attrition rates, focuses on improving the working conditions for teachers by providing additional administrative support. This support, in the form of curriculum and disciplinary assistance, as well as assistance with adjusting to what should be an exciting first year in the front of a classroom for our brand-new teachers, will increase workplace satisfaction, the number one reason cited by teachers for leaving.

As more experienced teachers stay on, and fewer positions need to be filled each year, our education system will see its much-needed boost in quality, and our students will get the very best education the United States can fewerfeweroffer.

With fewer and fewer teachers leaving the workforce, the flood of new, inexperienced, and even mediocre graduates into the teaching workforce can be stemmed. This will allow the United States to be much more selective in the process from which students choose careers in education, going as far back as high school.

A career in education will no longer be seen as an easy way out, contributing to the many of those who leave teaching after one or two years when they discover teaching is harder than they had previously thought. Instead, it would be more closely related to other highly professional fields, like law school or engineering, where students vie for the best spots in programs around the country, work hard from the very beginning of their higher education pathway, and are not unaware of the non-trivial challenges still before them after they graduate with a degree. No longer will we hear “those who can, do, those who can not and teach.”

The education system in its entirety will see a systematic overhaul, from the single action of providing support to our current teachers and GPAs creating a more productive environment. This overhaul, with its far-reaching effects, will provide the platform we need to get back to the front of the pack when it comes to the international education standards. Our students, those with below-averagetofallback GPAs and SAT scores, will no longer believe teaching is the career for them, as teachers will be seen as professionals with a serious mission, which they are. Teaching will no longer be seen as the fallback, fallbackGPAs plan for the many who just don’t want to push any harder than they must. Instead, higher than average scores on placement exams, followed by tough undergraduate and graduate programs, will provide the teaching pool with the needed replacements it will require, a number much smaller than before, and one that now will be filled by those students most able.

When the teaching environment is a healthy one, and teachers aren’t fleeing in droves, a career in education will be seen as a meaningful and illustrious option. The same students who before chose between law, engineering, medicine, and computer science will now see this as a viable choice. Our most skilled students, those proven to have the work ethic and time management skills needed to succeed under pressure, will now also consider a career in education. As education is bolstered by these individuals and we see progress in our education standards, compensation worthy of those in such an important position can be granted, further adding to the competitiveness of these teacher education programs and the limited placements available for new teachers in schools around the country.

The importance of a good education, the key to a succe, ssful career in the modern world, cannot be stressed enough. Starting at the K-12 level, the need to be proficient in basic math, science, reading, and English skills is paramount for every student. At higher levels, this is easily translated into a higher-degree-equals-greater-salary scenario. For every level of higher education someone achieves they will be able to move up a pay bracket. This all relies on excellent general education and can decide the future of many students. This is especially apparent in the medical field.

Occupations in the medical field are some of the most challenging and stressful jobs to have. Yet there is a clear correlation in this field between the level of education and compensation. For medical jobs that do not require a college degree and can be started with only a high school diploma, the average annual salary is between $20,000 and $40,000. This is a stark difference from those that require an associate’s or bachelor’s degree, such as allied health careers or nursing, which can pay an average of up to $60,000 annually. A master’s degree in nursing, paying up to $90,000, still doesn’t hit the bracket for a pharmacy degree, which can be as high as $115,000. All of these still are lower than a physician, or medical doctorate, from which one can make between $120,000 and $500,000 annually. This trend, one of higher education equals higher compensation, is found in many fields, and all begins with having an excellent general education (Santiago 2018).

This idea, to improve teacher workspaces by improving support systems from the administration, is the very first step in providing our children with this much-needed general education. If they are going to get into college, graduate, and pursue higher education degrees, there must be no doubt about their educational prowess. It will be this prowess, the ability of our graduating high school students to perform on exceptional levels, that will reverse the current trend. Not only will we see the United States once more lead the pack in education, and rise to the top in international ratings, but we will also supply our colleges with well-educated young adults who are ready to continue pursuing the next level of education.

After these students graduate with their last degrees and become official members of the American workforce, the fruits of this project will be clear. For we do not educate just for education's sake. Rather we educate so that these individuals can enter the workforce and push us ahead, further than we’ve ever gone before. For every industry that has hit a roadblock, and every research project that needs a new way of thinking, we will have the people for the job. NAS, A will get us to Mars and back, Memorial Sloan Kettering will find the cure for cancer, and renewable energy will be used to power our cities. As we take humanity to the edge of what was yesterday’s impossible, we will be riding on the curtails of education reform.
