Forest Helps to Conserve Soil And Water

Forest Conservation is the act of trying to save our forests from being cut down. Big timber companies are going to our tropical rainforests and cutting down all the trees that has stood there for hundreds of years, while other corporations are removing them to make space to run cattle or something, they’ll either cut them down are set fire to one. Usually, when one tree falls it brings down two or more trees with it. And when you burn the trees it releases all the carbon dioxide it had stored and puts it back into the atmosphere.

Which in turn is helping to destroy it. That’s why they created the idea and process of forest conservation to stop this and save our trees and the planet earth.

What people do not realize is that the trees is what makes the oxygen that we need to breath and survive. If the timber companies and other corporations clear out all the trees, then how can we survive? We can’t and that’s one of the big reasons on why everyone should support forest conservation and try to help as much as what they can.

Plus, the trees take in all the carbon dioxide that is released into the air and turns it into oxygen. Without trees to do this the process of destroying the atmosphere would speed up and it would cause climate change to happen faster. So, the trees help to reduce all the air pollution.

Another reason why it’s great to save our forests is because trees help to prevent soil erosion.

Whenever they start cutting down lots of trees it in returns causes all the top soil to become lose. With the top toil becomes lose it brings a great factor to having mudslides if it’s on a hill side. If it’s on flat land the top soil has a chance of being blown away from the wind. Plus, with it lose it means you can’t already plant anything in its place. The roots on the plants will not be able to stay in place without that solid ground. It wouldn’t be able to support any agriculture, and it would become useless to us.

One other reason we need to be focusing our attention to forest conservation is because the forests are home to many of our species. Their lively hood depends on the trees and without them they probably wouldn’t be able to survive. If we wipe out all the trees, then those species that call the forests home will be put into a life or death situation. Those species will either move and find a new place to live, learn to adapt to the new climate, and if worse comes to worse they could possibly become extinct. And normally when one species goes many more will follow in their place and leave their environment, because if one species food source if wiped out they’ll have to leave as well to find food to be able to survive.

Another huge impact of deforestation is the growing industry of agriculture. I found this out by one of the articles I read about forest conservation. In the article it stated that, “The Amazon, the planet’s largest rain forest, lost at least 17% of its forest cover in the last half century due to human activity- mainly clearing trees to create new or larger farms and ranches.” (WWF). That is a serious threat to the environment in and around that area, and it’s a perfect example of why we need to get our heads together and come up with a solution to stop this and fix the harm that we have caused.

One other huge impact that is causing our forests to disappear is the growing industry of palm oil. Palm oil is a type of vegetable oil that’s being use more and more nowadays. The demand for palm oil continues to grow and as it’s doing so it’s causing the palm oil industry to take new land to use to start producing more palm oil. Because of the growing demand, they’re cutting down more and more acres of land over in India. This is a serious problem and Green Peace is trying to do whatever they can to slow down the process of making palm oil, and or trying to stop it all together.

Digging deeper into the topic on forest conservation you will find several acts that had taken place in order to help save our forests. One act written up in Maryland set out to try and face this growing problem. The act is known as ‘The Forest Conservation Act of Maryland’. The act has stated that Maryland is taking steps to help with their forests by starting with flood control, wood products, renewable energy, and many other steps. In the act it states that a lot of Maryland’s wooded areas has been demolished and depleted of its resources, so they decided action needed to be taken. Over 8,000 acres of wooded area has been lost each year.

Water conservation is just as important as forest conservation. A lot of our drinkable water is getting polluted at a fast rate, and what’s not polluted is being wasted. A lot of our drinkable water is going towards animal agriculture and crop irrigation. Our water is in danger of being destroyed and it’s time to act here as well. The United States has the biggest aquifers in the world, and it’s called the Ogallala Aquifer. An aquifer is a large body of rock that contain underground fresh drinkable water, and like I said the United Stated is sitting on the largest one in the world.

This aquifer is so massive that it stretches underneath eight states which is around 174,000 miles long and is said to go back 10 million years. The states that it runs under is South Dakota, Nebraska, Wyoming, Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma, New Mexico and finally Texas. Now, this aquifer is so massive, you would think that we would have enough water to last us a lifetime. However, we are depleting this massive amount of water at rate in which it cannot replenish fast enough to meet our demands for water.

Because of this the United States is starting to go through some serious droughts in the dryer states out west. At the rate we’re depleting the aquifer, there will only enough water to last the United Sates for around fifty to sixty more years. And if we continue to take too much water

then that’s where you’ll start to see the major droughts. This is a huge crisis and we need to do all we can to limit the amount of water that is being taken from this massive source.

Another huge source of water for the United States that’s being depleted is the Colorado River. This mighty river spans over 1,450 miles along the United States. It runs through several states and has around fifteen dams (the Hoover Dam being the biggest) that sources power to the surrounded states. In recent years scientists has noticed that this huge river is running lower and lower on water. Not as much water is reaching the Gulf of Mexico like it used to. Now, a lot of the water is being taken from the river and used up faster than what the mountain runoff can replenish the river.

This is a serious effect. If the Colorado River runs dry, then the states out west are going to witness one of the biggest droughts in history. They won’t have any water to support their crops or livestock. Not to mention they will not have any water to drink. They’ll be forced to move elsewhere in search of drinkable water. That is why it’s important that we try to limit the amount of water that’s being taken from the river. Without that river those states wouldn’t be able to support its population.

One other serious is problem the water pollution across the world. A lot of the worlds water nowadays is being polluted to the fact where it’s undrinkable and we cannot use it for anything. A lot of industrial waste is being dumped into water sources that goes right into our drinking water. If something isn't done about that our clean water will be gone in no time. Steps has begun to take place in trying to fix this. Industries are now trying to get rid of all the waste that’s being produced in a way to where it will not hurt the environment along with the water supply. They haven’t made any major break throughs yet, because it’s hard to find a place where you can put the waste without it finding its way into our water.

When you focus back to the United States and the water crisis, you can see that some states have acted on trying to help conserve their water supply and reduce their chances of having a major drought in later years. California, being one of the few states that has taken action. The state of California is trying to get their residence to follow some basic steps into conserving their water. They’re encouraging people that it only takes a few small steps to start huge steps. They’re wanting their residents to do simple tasks like fixing leak in your pipes, or planting crops that doesn’t need that much water to survive. Another small factor can be to reuse dirty water for watering your plants.

California is in the process of making some new water conservation laws for the future. Some of these new laws should be taking affect in 2019. This new law will make regulation on indoor and outdoor water use in hopes to reduce the amount of water that’s being used. They’re setting water budgets and encouraging people stay within their budget. They’re hoping that everyone will follow these laws to insure they don’t have a major drought. As of right now, California’s water supply is low, and they’re trying everything that they can.

In conclusion, it is very important to focus our attention at the matter in hand which is forest and water conservation. If this problem continues to go unchecked for years to come, then we simply will NOT have these major resources that we need to survive. If we continue to cut down the rainforests and deplete our water supply, then things are going to take a turn for the worst. It could send us into a state of anarchy and send people into fighting over something as simple as water. And we can’t forget we won’t be able to breath if all the trees are cut down since they produce the oxygen that we breath. Our forests are being demolished, and our water is running low. If something isn’t done now, then there’s no turning back from this major crisis. Elected officials need to realize what is happening to our planet and they need to realize this fast before it’s too late.
