Humanity is obsessed with the identification of everything. Chemistry class is one of the classes that focus on this kind of thing; because it is where students first learn how the whole process of change, combining, and interacting works. It is also a class that always sounds so interesting since this is where students are able to test projects, theories, and just do fun experiments that show how something works or why does it work in the first place. Sadly, there are times where being in a classroom learning about this may become uneventful.
This is the reason that I am writing to you, the Principle. It is important for students to take a dangerous field trip for the purpose of our science education because we need new ways of being challenged and a new way of learning. I propose that students go on and visit an active volcano, the Mount Nyiragongo, DRC.
The Mount Nyiragongo, DRC is a dormant volcano, meaning that it can erupt at any moment, once again.
It has erupted 34 times since 1882, including times when it actively continued for years, many times leaving a lake form of lava.“On March 8, 2016, Goma Volcano Observatory discovered a new vent that opened in the northeast edge of the crater, following local reports of rumblings coming from the volcano. Some fear that this could lead to a flank eruption” A flank eruption is a volcanic eruption that takes place on the flank of a volcano instead of at the summit.
Even though it is most likely dangerous for people to be there; a lot of people still visit.
It is monitored 24/7, 365 days of the year with data being produced of seismic every four minutes and temperature every ten minutes. It is important that the people visiting are always safe. If we were to take this trip it would also be really good because we would not only get to see the lava lake but we would be able to see how they test and explore more of the science behind it.
Volcanoes also have a lot to do with science, especially since it begins with being a chemical reaction. Next, there are a lot of different elements that can be found in a volcano and the actual eruption of it like carbon, dioxide, sulfur dioxide, oxides, aluminois, low pH, gas and this are only a few of the elements that can be discovered. If we could go on this field trip we would be able to see and possibly collect samples to investigate the volcano which would help us understand more of what is happening.
As students we all want to do something incredible or leave a mark in the world that says we were here. So I propose that while on this trip we take advantage of the opportunity and try to predict when the next eruption of the volcano is. While on the trip we can spend one of our days by the volcano doing theories, test, and running experiments over the night to see if we can achieve this possibility or get as close to it as possible.
It is scientifically proven that people learn better by doing instead of just listening or watching in a class. This supports my argument that it would be good for us, as the students to be able to go and learn by ourselves experimenting, with a chaperone of course, because even though we are okay with being in class most of the time we want to do something that is more important where we could also be learning more about a subject in a more exciting way. A way were we could put all hands on deck, where we can have a new opportunity to learn, a chance to grow because as students, that is our purpose.
The students would appreciate this opportunity because we won’t only get to visit a different place but we get to learn about it in a way that is more eventful. At the same time we get another chance to have a bigger purpose to our education outside of school. I hope you take my idea inconsideration.
