Dunkirk is one of the silent yet impactful movies by Christopher Nolan, which is surely hailed by same by his masterpiece. It dramatizes the complexity of war, both its horrors and heroism. It is not made for easy viewing but it depicts story worth telling. The war violence in movie is real and intense, with heavy bombing not a bloodlust yet many deaths. It sends out message of bravery, teamwork and determination. It depicts not only the heroism of the soldiers but the simplest of people like Mr.
Dawson (a Yacht owner), who prepares himself to sail into water to save the lives of his countrymen and quotes ‘I will be useful’.
This movie has no protagonist and everyone who fights in war is hero. Dunkirk a small beach in France was saved and along with it the entire nation (France) by the spirited initiative and heroism of the British army and civilians like Mr.
Dawson. Dunkirk gives a glimpse of World War II’s intensifying situations where Unites States where officially neutral. Britain was the only power left that could possibly stand up to Germany. Dunkirk has many sub-plots that draw out both compassion as well as empathy for instance, at one moment there is malfunctioning fuel gauge, and oppositions between French and British soldiers, a shell shock on an unnamed soldier amplified by intense music to create anxious atmosphere. Apart from the airman sea captains risking their lives like practically in army war, plain sacred human decency of people would touch hearts as the old man was determined to provide food, blankets and shelter to the war ridden soldiers.
In order to eliminate the confusion of whose army we are actually watching on screen, as uniforms of the soldiers would almost be the same Nolan comes out with an interesting screenplay and shows only the Britishers and Frenchmen at war so you would that Germans are attacking them but the soldiers shown will all be of the British or its allies.
It is miracle of Dunkirk that saves lakhs of lives.
Churchill’s famous ‘never surrender’ was given in the wake of Dunkirk and a British commander later in film makes pronouncement that he won’t leave Stranded French soldier behind.
It is one of the most inspiring ‘defeats’ in the annals of history depicted with intense storytelling, less dialogue and intense music catering to strong emotions and intelligence, and all these things come together to make a historically lost battle, a moral victory.
