The film adaptation of Dorothy Allison’s book Bastard out of Carolina starts with a narrator who is played by Jena Malone, who is famous for her role as Johanna Mason from The Hunger Games, who tells us of how she was born after Anney who is played by Jennifer Jason Leigh, who is famous for movies such as Annihilation and The Hateful Eight, was thrown out of the car through the windshield due to a car accident, she was called Bone by one of her uncles and was declared illegitimate on her birth certificate due to her aunts filling out the legal paperwork which causes Anney to be obsessed with having the label removed off of her birth certificate without success.

While Bone was still a small child, Anney meets and marries Lyle, who is played by Dermot Mulroney who is famous for his roles in romantic comedies, westerns, and dramas, who is kind and hardworking and gives Anney another daughter named Karen, who is played by Kelsey Elizabeth Boulware who only appears in one other movie called The Three Lives of Karen, before dying in a car accident.

While working as a waitress with support from her family, she meets and marries Glen, who is played by Ron Eldard who is famous for his Broadway plays, even though there are signs that he has a temper and is deceitful. Glen appears to be a caring father and husband for a while until the time Anney goes to the hospital to give birth to his baby which is where Glen molests Bone and finds out that not only does he loses his anticipated baby but also Anney is unable to have any more children which, along with being unable to control his anger and get a steady job, causes him to physically and sexually abuse Bone to the point where Bone is unable to walk due to pain and has to be taken to the hospital for a broken tailbone which causes Anney to take her to the Aunt Raylene’s house, who is played by Diana Scarwid who is best known for her role as Christina Crawford in the movie Mommie Dearest so that she can recover until Glen promises Anney to never touch her again.

The bone then goes to Aunt Ruth’s house, who is played by Glenne Headly who is famous for her roles in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Dick Tracy, and Mr. Holland's Opus, who asks her about Glen and whether or not he molest her to which Bones denies it happening.

During Aunt Ruth’s funeral, Bone’s bruises get discovered by Aunt Raylene due to being found drunk in the bathroom and tell her uncles Earle, who is played by Michael Rooker who is famous for his roles in Cliffhanger, Mallrats, The Walking Dead, and Guardians of the Galaxy, Wade, who is played by Lyle Lovett who is best known for his songs, and Travis who beat Glen unconscious. The bone then goes to live with her aunts because she will not go home to him until one day Glen shows up while the aunts are away and try to force her to come back to him and rapes her when she refuses, tells him to leave and that she will tell Anney everything that he did to her, and fights him until Anney arrives and beats him up while carrying Bone to the car but comforts Glen when he beats himself up and asks her to kill him. The bone then wakes up at the hospital where she refuses to tell the cops interrogating her about who raped her and stays with Aunt Raylene and Uncle Earle. One day, Anney arrives one last time to give her a copy of the birth certificate without the label of illegitimate and apologizes about what she had to go through which causes her to cry.
