Spur GearSpur gears are currently the most used type of gears. They have straight teeth and are mounted on parallel shafts. Sometimes, many spur gears are used at once to create very large gear reductions. Garden, H. and Equipment, E. (2019). Spur gear are used in many different machines however they are not put in cars. The reason behind this is the loud noise that the spur gear produces. Each time the teeth collide a noise is produced this collision also increases the stress on the teeth.
To reduce the stress and noise in the gears, they are replaced by helical gears in cars. Advantages: The velocity ratio is constant. It is extremely reliable. The design and manufacturing process is simple. Higher efficiency when compared to the helical gear. Spur gear teeth are parallel to its axis.so, spur gear train does not produce axial thrust.so, The gear shafts can be easily mounted by using the ball bearings. 4023360635000 It can be used to dispatch a substantial amount of power.
Disadvantages:The gears operate in a slow-speed. A large amount of stress is experienced by the gear teeth. They do not have the ability to move power between non-parallel shafts. One would be unable to use them for long distance power transmission. When operating at high speeds they produce noises. They are not as strong as other gear types. Helical GearThe helical gear teeth are cut at a certain angle to face the gear. When two teeth engage, the contact begins on one end of the tooth and gradually advances as the gears rotate.
This occurs until the two teeth are fully engaged. This slow engagement causes the helical gears to work quietly and smoothly compared to spur gears, due to this, helical gears are used in more car transmissions. 424837438862000The angle of the teeth creates a thrust load on the gear once they mesh. Equipment which uses helical gears have bearings which support the thrust load. Advantages:Their angled teeth allow them to run quietly and smoothly. They are extremely durable and are supreme for high load applications. Their load is administered over multiple teeth during any time. They can move power and motion between both parallel or right-angle shafts. Disadvantages:An obvious disadvantage of the helical gears is a resultant thrust along the axis of the gear, which needs to be accommodated by appropriate thrust bearings, and more sliding friction between the meshing teeth, often addressed with additives in the lubricant. Thus, we can say that helical gears cause losses due to the unique geometry along the axis of the helical gear's shaft. They cause losses because of their geometry through the axis of the shaft. There is more power loss thus leading to less efficiency. Bevel GearBevel gears are used whenever the shaft's rotation needs to change its direction. They are usually mounted on shafts which are separated by 90 degrees however, they can be redesigned to work on different angles. 459486066421000The teeth can be cut in three different ways, straight, spiral or hypoid. Straight teeth however have a problem which is that as each tooth engages, they affect the corresponding tooth as well. A solution to this issue can be to curve the teeth. Advantages:They make it possible to alter the operating angle. . The different number of teeth on each wheel makes it possible for mechanical advantages to be altered. Disadvantages:One wheel of such gear is designed to work with its complementary wheel and no other. It has to be mounted precisely. The shaft's bearings have to be able to Worm WheelWorm gears are used whenever large gear reductions are necessary. Worm gears commonly have reduction of 20:1, sometimes it is even greater than 300:1. Worm gears have an intriguing property that other gear sets do not possess, the worm can turn the gear effortlessly however, the gear does not have the ability to turn the worm. This occurs due to the friction between both the worm and the gear holds the worm in its place. 445770087566500This feature is especially useful for machines which require their locking feature to also act as a brake when their motor is not working (an example for this is a conveyor system). Another way in which the worm gear is used is in the Torsen differential which is used on cars and trucks which require high performance. Advantages:The worm gear works quietly and at a smooth pace. They possess the ability to self-lock. They take up a small space. They produce a proper meshing effectiveness. Another use for them is to increase torque and decrease speed. They have a high velocity ratio and the order of 100 can be reached in one step. Disadvantages:The materials used to create the worm gear are costly. They have a high level of power loss. The potential for the considerable sliding action leads to lower efficiency. They produce a massive amount of heat. Rack and Pinion4110990128524000Rack and pinion gears are used to convert rotation into linear motion. A perfect example of this is the steering system on many cars. The steering wheel rotates a gear which engages the rack. As the gear turns, it slides the rack either to the right or left, depending on which way you turn the wheel. Rack and pinion gears are also used in some scales to turn the dial that displays your weight.Advantages:Low cost.Efficient.Powerful.convert rotation motion into linear motion in an easy way.It gives more compact and easier control over the vehicle.Disadvantages:Being ancient, the wheel is more convenient and a little more expensive in terms of energy as well. Due to friction, one would have guessed how much power being input gives in terms of output, a large amount of the force applied to the mechanism and around 80% of the overall force is burned. (Atta, E. (2019)). The rack and pinion may only work with specific levels of friction. If the friction becomes too high the mechanism will wear more than usual and will need a higher fore to be able to operate. (Atta, E. (2019)). Due to the friction, the rack and pinion is under constant wear which will probably need to be replaced after a certain amount of time. (Atta, E. (2019)). Reference list:Atta, E. (2019).
