13 Reasons Why, a TV series by Jay Asher, shows that the actions one makes can affect others; the show is about a young high school student Hannah Baker, as she died because of her friends' betrayal and bullying from other students from her school and it culminated with her suicide. In the show, Hannah shows the thirteen reasons why she decided to end her life in an audio diary which is mailed to a friend two weeks after her death. The viewers learned a lot from the characters; bullying can end someone's life.
In 13 Reasons Why there are many cons in the series.
For instance, the show glamorizes suicide by showing that killing oneself and leaving a tape-recording is the only way to successfully show the world a message. For the viewers that see the main character Hannah Baker as a strong person, seeing her commit suicide on-screen is devastating. Instead of discussing her problems with her parents, Hannah takes her own life.
This series implies to people who are dealing with bullying that suicide is their only option. The show suggests to victims that they cannot take control of their situation and take steps towards making a change. Hannah does not stand up to her bullies at all. Instead, she creates these tapes to explain why she commits suicide after it it is too late.
Another con is the series demeans to those who work as school counselors. In the series, Hannah tries to talk to her school counselors. Once suicidal risks were present, her school counselor brushed Hannah off and did not offer the proper attention she deserved.
This is against the law, if a student comes in with a problem the counselor should let the parents know. In general, this should never occur in a real school setting. Finally, the show does not send a good message to teenagers. The teenagers in the series deal with serious issues, but they do not talk to their parents. No one in 13 Reasons Why talks to their parents about what is happening at their school. If any student would have come towards bullying and other issues, the life of a victim may have been saved.
Despite the major follows, there are some pros about 13 Reasons Why. Later on, during the series after Hannah commies used, the school presents at Safeway to discuss suicide. Suicide can be a difficult subject to discuss with others. The series helps those who struggle with discussing mental illnesses, bullying, sexual assault, or suicide. Some parents even watch the series with their teenagers and discuss the episodes afterward. In reality, many teenagers and young adults do not tell their parents what is happening in their lives. This television series helps everyone discuss these difficult issues without making them awkward.
Another pro is a series discusses how small actions can have big consequences, and how it no action comes without a reaction. Within several episodes, viewers realize that “the list” brings consequences such as bullying and sexual salt. “The list” is a list and one of the episodes where athletes would write a list and name of girls and Hugh would rate them One through 10 and make sure the girls that were on the list know that they were rated. The series shows that people should treat others with kindness instead of treating them down through gossip and hurtful comments. In the series, Hannah Baker said, “ you don’t know what goes on in anyone’s life but your own. And when you mess with one part of a person's life, you’re not messing with just that part. Unfortunately, you can’t be that precise and sensitive. When you mess with one part of a person's life, you’re messing with their entire life.” Hannah explains, when someone is messing with a part of someone's life, they are actually messing with their entire life. We should never underestimate the power of words and actions, no matter how big or small the action may seem.
In conclusion, In 13 Reasons Why, the viewers learn a lot from the characters. First, anyone can be a victim, it could be a billionaire they are also capable of committing suicide. Actions and words have consequences; Whatever anyone says to a person they are always going to react to. The show reveals that words have an amazing power to build or destroy a person. It is important to talk about your problems to an adult. Suicide and depression affect so many people, everyone has their own issues, be kind, you should always treat others with love and respect if everyone had followed this role things could have been so different for every single character in the series. Overall, I don’t recommend anyone going through a hard time in school to watch this show, If anyone wants to watch it, I recommend watching it with a parent.
