The title of the novel is “La Hasil” and it is written by a famous Pakistani writer Umera Ahmad. La Hasil was published in Khawateen Digest from September 2001 to December 2001.
Umera Ahmed is the most selling Urdu author in Pakistan. She is best known as an Urdu novelist and Drama script writer. She has also written different short and long Urdu fiction stories, published in different Urdu Digests and Magazines. Many Urdu novels of Umera Ahmed are also dramatized.
Theme: La Hasil is a sublime tale of individuals who faced different trials in life. Driven by desire, belief, pride and prejudice, they run their lives according to their views. It’s a story of redemption of someone and regrets of someone else. It’s a story of bringing out yourself from filth and then walking on the path of self-rectification & self-righteousness. It’s a story that tells when someone finds the light by the Grace of Almighty then nothing else matters anymore.
The plot of this novel is based on a moral.
It tells its readers about how people perceive life in their own ways and how harsh the realities of life can be. La Hasil teaches everyone, a lesson, to leave the lusts one chases, because the willingness to get everything in life can leave one with nothing at all. This novel depicts this idea in a very clear manner.
Khadija Noor is the main character who is firm in her belief, patience and self-sacrifice.
Umera Ahmad gives us in depth look into Khadija Noor’s character. Mazhar is a seemingly practicing Muslim and self-proclaimed caretaker of Islam.
Marium is another main and strong character, by which desire is personified. Marium is the character that I like the most which gives meaning to the novel. Catherine is a British girl, whose Pakistani father betrayed her mother, Ruth. This left irreparable scars on their lives.
Zalaid is a soft and clear hearted person with broad vision. He is the symbol of positivity in the novel. Shuja is a humble and down to earth man.
The life of Catherine and Mazhar is written in the social context of England. Events took place with Umme Mariam, Mama Jan and Zalaid are Pakistani context and setting.
The important events of the novel include:
Umera Ahmad builds the suspense from the very beginning of the novel. As she states in the first paragraph of the novel: "She does not describes further details about the lady and starts another totally different scene to keep the reader’s interest in the novel. Another interesting thing in which writer keeps the reader in suspense throughout the novel is the relation of Mama Jan and Zalaid. It is at the end of the novel when writer discloses the Mama Jan is the mother of Zalaid.
There is also a factor of imagination in the novel. Umera Ahmad describes the details of the paintings which Umme Mariam paints so powerfully as if they are real. One of them is as follows:" Umera Ahmed describes that piece of artwork that it feels like she has keen interest in arts. Summary of the Novel :In the first chapter, we see Zalaid, he is businessman from a rich family and really loves painting. The story starts with a painting he sees on the wall. He admires it.
Moving on to the most important character of this book, Umme Mariam. Umme Mariam is girl who has a really great talent in painting. She sells her painting from a very young age due to her living circumstances. All the time she complains about living in a house that looks like something that poor people lives in. She is an ungrateful person. She is brought up by a hardworking mother in a small town in Karachi, Pakistan – Mama Jan.
Now moving on, Catherine is a British girl, whose Pakistani father betrayed her mother, Ruth when Catherine was really young. Whenever Ruth sees Pakistani, she would spit on them and say bad stuff about them. Catherine’s mother gets sick one day and because having not enough money to treat her cancer, she sells her body at the young age. One day, her mother dies and she just feel so down and almost gave up her life. Then she meets a Pakistani man Mazharand looking at him reminds her of what her father did to her deceased mother and throws the coffee on him that she was drinking.
Later, they talk and clear the misunderstanding and spend much more time together. In the meantime, Catherine learns about Islam through Mazhar. He tells Catherine, if she accepts Islam later in the future, he would name her Khadija Noor because he loves that name.
Mazhar tells Catherine that he hasgo to Pakistan to resolve a few matters and would be back in a few months. After he comes back, they would get marry. Meanwhile, when Mazhar was in Pakistan, one day Scotland Yard comes at her door takes her with them. Turn out, it wasn’t the police that took her, it was someone else. They come for her so that she could help them to do some unethical job which she agreed because she had no choice. Either live or die.
The man takes her to London and there she spends 6 months and finally she escapes but she couldn’t find Mazhar. But one day, they both meet in a store and sort things out and get marry. They even had a son later on.
Moving on to Umme Mariam’s mother, Mama Jan. She is so patient with Mariam’s constant in thankfulness. She just keeps quiet and listens to her. Umme Mariam always taunts her for being much helpful for others. She was a British woman married to a Pakistani man Shuja. This was her second marriage. Umme Mariam always taunts Mama Jan about going to England to study her arts where she could get famous but due to their living standard, Mama Jan doesn’t agree. Umme Mariam then meets Zalaid to discuss her art talent and more. Umme Mariam never thought she would fall in love with Zalaid and day and night she would ask Mama Jan to pray for her so that she could get Zalaid but it actually happens so. At last they get marry and with the help of Zalaid she becomes very famous.
She ignores her mother after the marriage. Zalaid always meets Mama Jan and spends more time with her. They both feel a warm sensation when they are together and Mariam hates that. She doesn’t like Zalaid spending time with Mama Jan. She argues with Mama Jan and says so many things about her character. Umme Mariam thinks that she has conquered the world and proud of herself very much. She was only interested in her parties and the means to get more and more famous. But this is where the writer amazes everyone and discloses that she is the one whom her own parents did not accept and the woman (Mama Jan) she hated was the one who gave her shelter, identity and meaning to her life. She discovers that Mama Jan is not her mother but the mother of Zalaid. Zalaid’s father ‘Mazhar’ divorced Khadija Noor (Mama Jan) when he came to know about her past. The time Umme Mariam feels sorry for her, Mama Jan was no more. There remains nothing for her but only regrets.
