Yoko Ono and John Lennon: Love Story

Some people would argue that these two love birds had the most romantic love story in history. Perhaps what makes their love story so special is how abruptly it was cut short and yet how much impact their love has had in the world in general. Yoko Ono and John Lennon are two people whose paths were very unlikely to cross and yet somehow, the universe made magic happen. John Lennon was an artist who is known for being a member of the popular group called The Beatles, while Yoko Ono is also an artist, singer, song writer and was married to John Lennon until his death.

Just as much as their love story is loved, it is also criticized by some seeing as John was married to another woman when he met Yoko. He started having an affair with Yoko Ono while still married and when his wife found out, they got legally divorced. Also, Yoko Ono has been blamed in the past for the splitting of the most successful band in history, although that argument is questionable.

His father's name was Alfred Lennon while his mother's name was Julia Lennon and John had quite a complicated relationship with his parents. Growing up, he spent most of his time with his mother as his father was often away even at the time of John Lennon's birth. However, John's dad used to send money regularly to his family for their welfare.

One day, the money stopped coming. John Lennon's father apparently ghosted on his family for 6 months after which he showed up and offered to look after the family but was turned down by his wife who was pregnant with another man's child. At some point, 5-year old Lennon was asked to choose between his mother and his father of which he chose to go live with his mother and had no contact with his dad for 2 decades.

How did They Meet?

These two iconic figures met each other on the 9th of November, 1966 in London at the Indica Gallery. It appears that Yoko was displaying her conceptual art exhibit at the gallery and the owner of the gallery John Dunbar had introduced them to one another. They immediately became friends as John had become intrigued by one of Yoko's piece called 'Hammer A Nail' which had simply been created by patrons who had hammered nails into a board to create art. For fun, Lennon had asked to also hammer in a nail himself but Yoko, not knowing who he was had refused. That same day, Lennon had also helped himself to a bite of an apple that Yoko had on display and it had infuriated her.

They became friends or even more than that as Yoko was always calling Lennon's house. At that time, John Lennon was married to a woman named Cynthia and she had asked him about Yoko's frequent calls to the house which he had dismissed. John Lennon and Yoko Ono first made love in John's apartment while Cynthia was on holiday. She walked in on them with Yoko wearing a bathrobe and John who had simply said 'Oh, hi.' In 1968, John and Cynthia got divorced.

In 1969, Lennon changed his name legally, adding Ono as his middle name. Ono had 3 miscarriages for Lennon before she eventually gave birth to a son named Sean. In December, 1980, John Lennon was murdered in the presence of Yoko Ono.

Who Is She Married to Now?

After the death of John Lennon, Yoko has remained single and has focused all her energy on creating art. She has also become a philanthropist, as she established an annual music competition with BMI Foundation. The competition focused on contemporary musical genres, and was made to honor Lennon’s creative legacy and memory. She has also received many humanitarian awards for her active works for humanity.
