War in Ernest Hemingway's Works

Throughout history there have been many greats. Legends of all sorts, veterans, philosophers, authors, scientists, and the list goes on. These type of people left marks on history, the world is forever changed because of them. They live on forever through their achievements and contributions. For example, authors, specifically, live on through their work, they are revived with every word read. Their legacy lives on to eternity. One individual who comes to mind when thinking of the greats is Ernest Hemingway.

His foot print on the world is catastrophic. Hemingway’s life was one big escapade throughout which he wrote notorious collected works and survived much of impossible. Hemingway’s taste for adventure and authentic experiences served him well as he wrote renowned literature, which will be read for centuries to come.

Unexpectedly enough Hemingway had a for the most part an average upbringing. He was the first child of Clarence and Grace Hemingway, born on July 1899 in Cicero Illinois (Young), (“Ernest Hemingway - Biography, Quotes of Ernest Hemingway”).

His parents sought out a simple life for their young family, they lived in a quiet suburb of Chicago. They spent their summers in Michigan at their cabin on the lake. When Hemingway was at his family’s cabin he developed a passion for the outdoors (“Ernest Hemingway”). His outdoorsy spirit would later translate into his famous writings. Hemingway’s first encounter with writing came in high school, where he wrote about sports for his school newspaper. He later used his experience in journalism to translate into a career (Young).

Straight out of high school Hemingway did not advance onto college, he instead moved to Kansas City. There he wrote for The Kansas City Star, following local news. He stated that writing for a newspaper taught him the importance of writing simple true sentences (“Ernest Hemingway - Biography, Quotes of Ernest Hemingway”). Still in his young life at the ripe age of nineteen, Hemingway wanted to serve in World War I. Denied of hand to hand combat he had to settle for driving an ambulance in The Italian army (Young). Hemingway was injured in the war and was sent to a Milan Hospital. While Recovering he fell in love with a red cross nurse. She was his first true love, unfortunately she left him for another man. This ill-fated event inspired the famous novel, A Farewell to Arms (“Ernest Hemingway - Biography, Quotes of Ernest Hemingway”).

After recouping Hemingway moved back to the states and back to his hometown of Chicago. There he met his first wife, Hadley Richardson, in 1921. One year after marriage, the young couple swooned off to Paris, where Hemingway was an international newspaper correspondent. Also while in Paris he encountered and was fortified by multiple famous authors; such as, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Gertut Stein, and Ezra Pound. (Young). The encouragement Hemingway received at the hand of such great authors, allowed his non journalistic works to take off.

His stimulation for writing usually came from his many extravagant adventures. He once went to a famous festival in Spain, called San Fermín. He used his experience from the festival to write The Sun Also Rises (“Ernest Hemingway”). This riveting novel was his first true success. Within this time, Hemingway divorced and remarried. Though still rooted in Paris, he traveled not just to Spain, but Florida and Africa too. He enabled his outdoorsy side by bullfighting, deep-sea fishing, and hunting big game (“Ernest Hemingway - Biography, Quotes of Ernest Hemingway”). With all his adventures in Spain, Hemingway felt connected to it somehow. So when a journalist was needed to cover the Spanish civil war he was the first to go back. Hemingway being exposed to intense chaos, he was inspired to write his next novel, For Whom the Bell Tolls (“Ernest Hemingway”). Likewise, when another war began, Hemingway was all too ready to throw himself into it. World War II served as his final journalism correspondent contract. During the war, Hemingway was even present at of major turning points in the war, such as the D-Day landing (“Ernest Hemingway - Biography, Quotes of Ernest Hemingway”).

After the War, Hemingway retired from journalism in 1951. That same year he wrote The Old Man and the Sea, debatably one of his most famous books. Two years after publishing, the novel even won him the long denied Pulitzer Prize (“Ernest Hemingway - Biography, Quotes of Ernest Hemingway”). He was also received the Nobel prize of literature in 1954. As he persisted to write he continued his expedites of exploring and adventuring. Hemingway flying worldwide, while in his older age, survived multiple plane crashes and sustained numerous injuries. Hemingway eventually was unable to keep up with his vigorous lifestyle, he was left with no choice but to retire from his régime of life. (Young).

Hemingway retired in in Idaho (“Ernest Hemingway”). In his retirement he had to deal with crippling depression and extreme anxiety. All of which was most likely caused by his life, constantly surrounded by war and his traumatic escapades. Hemingway was hospitalized twice in a Mayo Clinic for his disorders (Young). Then, on July 2 1961, Hemingway took his own life by means of a shotgun (“Ernest Hemingway - Biography, Quotes of Ernest Hemingway”).

Hemingway’s death brought an end to his own era of notorious works. To this day, he is still inspiring young authors with his iconic bravura People worldwide are drawn to his blunt, virile, simple writing style. When asked about his means of his works Hemingway said, 'From things that have happened and from things as they exist and from all things that you know and all those you cannot know, you make something through your invention that is not a representation but a whole new thing truer than anything true and alive, and you make it alive, and if you make it well enough, you give it immortality.”, this is perfectly said as it describes his way of writing and immortality (“Ernest Hemingway”). He wrote in a meaningful way without unnecessary emotion or inessentials. Hemingway’s writings can be read by anyone and understood by all. His literature was beautifully minimalistic (Young).
