The Use of Figurative Language in Mother to Son, a Poem by Langston Hughes

Categories: Free Essays

I really liked this poem because it was accessible and had an important message for the reader. In this poem, Langston Hughes uses a lot of figurative language. In this poem, Hughes depicts that you should not give up in life so easily and you should work hard because nothing is handed to you in life. This is evident when the mother says in the poem: "I've been a-climbin' on, and reachin landin's and turnin corners."

The poet writes in figurative language to show that life is dark and sometimes hard, but it can be bright and happy.

She worked hard and achieved her goals. The words "reach the ground" explain that Mom reached places where she felt happy and kind, and was still looking for more ways to help herself from the "tight corners". Or change your life

The poem's speaker is a mother who is explaining to her son how she had to work hard for what she has.

She is giving advice to her son about never giving up. He seems to be going through a rough time.

Giving up wouldn't do any good for the mother. 17-20. "Cause you finds it's kinder hard/Don't you fall now--/For I'se still goin', honey,/I'se still climbin'. "It shows the son shouldn't give up easily since he still has a long way to go, from hearing the struggles the mother went through and she still is fighting and reaching to where she wants to go. The words "kinder hard" and "don't you fall now" shows life will be hard no matter what, but it doesn't mean giving up is your option, and it wouldn't take you anywhere if you do give up.
