The Bigotry Of The World

As a young African American woman that has lived in an urban area all her life, I can solemnly swear I am racist. I’m the racist person who has been victimized with dirty looks when striding the streets of Manhattan or any other prestigious upper class neighbourhoods, but I'm also the same prejudiced person who has victimized others with such looks as well. I'm the racist person who has been persecuted in high end stores and even been refused service by these stores because of the color of my skin, but I’m also the same prejudiced person who has refused to patronize with a business because the owners are of a certain race, religion or gender.

The urban experience made me and many other people view life this way as modern civilization often misinterpret the true definition of the urban experience because they only think of blacks when hearing the word urban however, it’s more complex than that.

The true meaning of the urban experience varies from nationalities, sexualities and gender inequality.

Firstly, boys are well known categorized into being masculine and macho since the day their are born, as their supposed to play with cars and trucks, or play rough sports like football or boxing, and other manly things. Girls are known for being the total opposite as they’re are known for loving the color pink, playing with Barbie dolls, and upholding themselves as little princesses, but what if you’re princess wanted to dress like a prince in school? And what if your son wanted to tryout for the cheerleading team instead of the football team? The urban experience I grown accustomed to growing up will without hesitation discriminate, ostracize, and torment the sexualites of those kids and other people that share the same similarities or traits.

People who are deemed different in urban areas solely based on their sexuality are usually bullied and discriminated against. This generation is too ignorant, idiotic to not be prejudice to those who do fall within the Adam and Eve normality but be prejudice to those who believe in Adam and Steve. It’s illogical and half witted for people to not accept LGBT and there sexual preference as the LGBT community grows each year stronger and powerful “the percentage of American adults identifying as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT) increased to 4.5% in 2017, up from 4.1% in 2016 and 3.5% in 2012” (Frank Newport, U.S Estimate Of LGBT Population) Even though the world has progressed greatly in the last couple of decades in the LGBT community; the world is still not fully involved with the evolving and transforming with the LGBT community as that has to change immediately.

For decades, males have always been more feared upon than women, and it is no different in modern urban areas. It is even more so imposed in the outskirts of Chicago or in any other crime oriented city. When people automatically think of how “dangerous” and “ghetto” urban areas are, they think about the men who is responsible for making it dangerous, they think of the criminals, they think of the convicts, they think of the gangsters and nowadays people often stereotype these people to be African American males. People do not usually cross the street when the see a young adult female walking towards them, however if that person were to be a young adult male they would do it without hesitation. The urban experience is thinking a man is more likely to hurt you than a woman is so we are prejudice and stereotypical towards men in urban areas much more than other people in other areas. People from many countries, developing or not, wants to share the American lifestyle, which they refer to the American Dream. Many immigrants were able to leave they’re country hoping for a better life, a new start as America over the years have been known for its mix ethnicities, cultures and nationalities.

Overall, the true definition of the urban experience in my perspective is bigotry as the race obstacles in the United States continues to be a subject that is a very fragile topic for all races. America’s history in confronting the racial issues and dealing with diversity among its citizens continue to be an ongoing issue, however, tolerance, and understanding can go a long way in the healing of the old wounds. We all need to realize as a nation how much bigotry goes on in our daily life and stop underseek like it does not happen. What will happen if we do not stop it and we keep pretending like it does not happen?
