The Beach Reflection
The Beach Reflection
A new sunny day has just begun. The beach is silent, but only for a while. Very soon crowds of people will flood on to the beach. The bright, burning ball blinds and rises like a sunflower on the distant horizons. The subtle sea sparkles preciously as it strolls up against the shore spilling the previous day’s remains.
Crashing against the shore, small waves flash the night’s debris onto the beach. Untouched golden sand, so soft and smooth, glistens; reflecting the sun’s rays. A soothing, light and refreshing sea breeze rustles through the first visitors of the beach. The whole place itself shows a wide range of colours that reflect on the surface like a dancing peacock demonstrating its feathers.
The sun has now reached its peak. While the holidaymakers, already red like boiled lobsters, are battling to find the best place to lie down, beach shopkeepers prepare for their day of exited costumers bursting in and out of their small seafood shop. Young children stumble onto the moist sand with small buckets and spades in their hands. Damp sand is forced in between their toes. Children run towards the shoreline; their parents struggle onto the sand, loaded like camels with everything they will need for their day.
Set apart from the young children, a group of teenagers are socializing with their drinks and enjoying music that blares louder than the seagull’s squawking overhead. Suddenly, the scent of hot food attracts them and they start running towards the sea shop like they haven’t eaten for weeks. While the teenagers gorge their food, the queue of others, who have been hypnotised by an overpowering scent of fast food, grows.
A hot breeze rushes through the visitors’ hair and they can taste the salt. The sound of the waves, crashing against the shore, seagulls swooping overhead and the strong scent of sun screen surrounds the beach.
The sea has now changed to a deep blue. Its smooth surface seemed destroyed because people were cramming in, splashing and playing around. A group of young children wrestle with a lilo whilst a crowd of old people try to stay upright, gently knocked by the repeated waves.
The air is thick with an unusual mixture of smells of sun lotion, food and the sea. As an exhausted, luminous day is about to finish, the sun and sea are becoming tired and are losing their energetic glow and warmth, the same as the crowds. Gradually, beach visitors disappear into their cars, until only a few dog walkers and people hunting for their last possession, remain.
The sea calms once again and the rough sand is happy to breathe again. The sun sinks gracefully towards the horizon, comfortably bedded for a long night’s rest. Once again the beach is deserted.
