Tesco was founded in 1919 by jack Cohen. During this time the business has expanded to become the 3rd largest multinational grocery retailer store measured by gross revenues. They operate in 13 different countries around the world. They are market leaders of grocery in the UK and have employed over 450,000 people and serve 80 million customers a week.

Purpose

Tescos purpose is to make customers enjoy their services and products that they have sold, have a better quality of life and easer way of living.

They offer products at cheaper prices and they are in a competitive market. And they want to serve customers better everyday. By giving them quality products such as foods, groceries, clothes, insurance etc.. as well as reducing waste globally and make a positive contribution to the communities. Tesco looks to make a profit.

Tesco uses functional organisational structure which means that they are separated in departments to increase efficiency and each department has separate managers to help with problems. This is used for specific reasons such as the following;

This is used to get more customers and attract them, it uses the price, promotion, place and product. And marketing research is done by using secondary and primary research.

Finance

The people handling the finance will be responsible to handle the cash flow and know where money is coming in and out of the business as well as producing a report to show how well the business is doing.

Sales

This is how Tesco sells their products to their customers, they help customers if needed and to sales is done through retailers, online store and mail.

Human resource

Tesco uses this to take care of employees and if needed to find specialist employees and recruit people.

Research and development

This is used to see what the customers like and what could be improved in order to meet customer satisfaction and making them happier.

Geographical

Tesco uses the geographical area for the 3 places; UK, Central Europe and Asia. This is used to manage each area and see how each area is operating and which areas doing better. The manager of that specific area will know exactly how to increase sales and deal with problems. As they have over 6,800 shops in the world, to have geographical managers would be good because not only one person can watch over all companies.

Tesco is a public limited company which means that Tesco sells shares to the general public and anyone interested. Tescos shares are also in the stock market for people to buy, Tesco is owned by shareholders who fund the company. They have limited liability because if the company goes in debt their personal items won't be at risk. founder Jack Cohen has 51% of shares in the company which means that the company cant make decisions without him as he has the most control over it. Public limited companies are good as they can easily raise capital by sharing stocks in the stock exchange market and there is an unlimited amount of shareholders. Being a big company Tesco doesn't struggle with cash flow. The disadvantages are when the original owners may loose control and directors may make decisions which the shareholders may not like.

Tesco has limited liability, this means that the people that have invested into the business cant loose more money than they invested into the business. By Tesco having limited liability this encourages people to invest into the company as they cant loose more then they invested and their personal things that they own cant get taken away. The owners liabilities aren't at risk if the company goes down, including Jack Cohen himself who has a 51% share in the business, it will not take his personal assets but the business itself would be affected.

Oxfam

Oxfam is a non profit organization which was founded in 1942. They are international confederation of 20 NGOs working with partners in over 90 countries worldwide. They help poverty around the world. Oxfams headquarters is in Nairobe, Kenya and it was founded at oxford in England. Oxfam employs 5,300 people worldwide and works with over 22.000 people worldwide.

Purpose

Oxfam's purpose is to create long-lasting solutions to injustice or poverty. They are part of a global movement for change, that empowers people to create a future that is secure, and free from poverty. Oxfam wants a world without poverty and to help the needy by giving them jobs and helping them with housing and other materials. They also want a decrease in the gap between rich and poor as 62 people own as much wealth as the poorest 3.5 billion people in the world.

organizational structure is used to help the business meet certain criteria's ad aims. This allows them to have someone looking under their workers to see if the work is going smoothly or not. Oxfam has a flat organizational structure, this is because they don't have as many employees. It has a geographical structure, this is because it has to work in many different states and cities, they assist people in many countries who are less fortunate than other people. The charity Is run by a charwomen Caroline Thomson who takes responsibility of all decisions in the business and has a big span of control. Charities want less directors in order to cut costs low. This shows that there is only one person who can make decisions and this can be done much quicker. Oxfams' company doesn't have as many meetings as Tesco would have, this is because most of the people working are volunteers. Oxfam is a much more simple company and has simple goals that don't change as much. As well as that, since Oxfam's organizational structure is flat, decisions are made from the chair but can be guided by some of the employees as everyone is part of this business. The business is easier to handle as there are many volunteers, but the workers that work for the company may not be as efficient as there is no specific managers for each task.

They use functional areas in order to increase efficiency, and to get the business known worldwide. This helps the business increase in the amount of volunteers around the world to help Oxfam and help with its problems.

This is used to raise awareness to the public of the situations that are going on in the world and persuade them to donate money so that they can help poverty around the world.

Finance

This is a functional area for Oxfam used in order to manage the business money, the finance team handles the amount of money given to Oxfam through donations, handles the wages of the people and produces a report of where all the money is being used. They handle the money going in and out of the company.

Research/Development

They use this to see how they could develop their services in order to help people better, they have to see what each group of people need in order to help them better. This helps Oxfam look ahead. They come up with new ideas to help the people suffering.
