arrangement in a series with increasing force

Hyperbole
overstatement or exaggeration

Irony
implying the opposite of what is actually said

metaphor
implied comparison of one person/thing with another

Metonymy
substitution of a word that is related to or only suggestive of the more commonly used word

Personification
act of attributing human characteristics to things not human

Preterition
mentioning a fact by pretending to pass over it

Simile
comparison whereby a person/thing is likened to another

Synechdoche
referring to a part as if it were the whole (rarely vice versa)

triad
use of three elements in a group

wordplay
play on words where two words of similar sound but different meanings are employed (pun)
