IoT Security Predictions: Research Proposal

Research Proposal:Keywords: Internet of Things, Internet of Everything, IoT devices, Security, PredictionsIntroduction:The Internet of Things is comprised of smart' devices that use wireless technology to talk to one another and to users1. These connected devices offer smarter, more efficient experiences for users, impacting business, manufacturing, healthcare, retail, security and transport.IoT products can be found in the home, the office, industry and across our cities, with numerous applications already realized. In addition to a connection that allows them to communicate, these devices usually have digital sensors to collect relevant data and a processor to process the data.

the IoT was comprised of 15 billion devices and is set to grow to 30+ billion by 2020, equivalent to 3 smart objects for every human on Earth2. Though an IoT user's main interest is the data gathered, devices need to be designed so that they operate safely and securely for their intended lifetimes and purposes.Tiny computers everywhereThe internet of things includes countless types of devices webcams, pressure sensors, thermometers, microphones, speakers, stuffed animals and many more " made by a vast array of companies.

Many of these manufacturers are small and unknown, and don't have popular brands or public reputations to protect. Their goals are to produce lots of devices to sell as cheaply as possible. Customers' cyber security isn't a real concern for them. These devices' variety means they're useful for lots of things, but also means they have a wide range of vulnerabilities. They include weak passwords, unencrypted communications and insecure web interfaces.

With thousands, or hundreds of thousands, of identically insecure devices scattered all over the world, they're a wealth of targets ripe for the hacking. In 2019 alone, around 3.6 billion devices that were connected to the internet were used for daily tasks. Data experts have analyzed this and have said that the internet of things will most likely increase and keep on doing so for a long period of time. The number has gone from millions to billions in the span of just one year, this rate is both exciting and alarming at the same time. Approximate computingToday's computing systems are designed to deliver exact solutions at a high energy cost. But many error-resilient algorithms like image, sound and video processing, data mining, sensor data analysis and deep learning do not require exact answers.Flexible precisionNowadays, most personal computers contain a 64-bit standard numerical format. This means that they use a number with 64 digits (either zero or one) to perform all the computations.3D graphics, virtual reality and augmented reality require the 64-bit format to work. But basic audio and image processing can be done with a 32-bit format and still provide satisfying results. The rise of the bonnetA bonnet is a network of internet connected devices that have been hacked, hijacked and controlled remotely. The problem is that poorly secured IoT accounts make perfect targets for hackers attempting to develop and weaponries bonnets. With the right malware, hackers can use bonnets to perform distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks against specific targets. The malware uses thousands of devices to flood internet servers with traffic and disable access to online resources. Billions of IoT devices make it easier for hackers to take control of large bonnets and attack even the most robust targets.Living Areas Will Now Be Smart Areas Cities will now become smart because of their information gathering devices such as surveillance cameras and video kiosks will be connected to the internet. They will have enhanced jobs to perform which they will be able to do more effectively and with little chance of error. People have already started investing in smart homes,' where the home is fully equipped with gadgets such as Nest thermostats and Philips Hue light bulbs. Market research suggests that the smart home industry will reach around 53 billion dollars by 2020. Artificial Intelligence Will Become a Trend From coffee makers to refrigerators, to homes and indoor and outdoor lighting, every smart device connected to the internet will learn its user's patterns and habits and will respond accordingly through learning. Machine learning is a term which means that computers will start learning through a process and won't really have to be programmed by a person. Every Business Will Need It Even now, big businesses who are equipped with IoT have a competitive edge over other businesses in their industry. In the near future, it will become a necessity for every industry to use IoT in one way or another. Around 94% of businesses who have invested in it have already seen a return on investment. Self-Driving Cars Experts have predicted that this will be wide spread by 2020. Cars will be connected to the internet and will have the ability to be driven automatically with built-in internet services that will enhance the car's functions. It should be noted that Google is already there, they have and started testing autonomous driving. It is safe to say that the Internet of Things is the future. Over time, it's expected that many aspects of our life will be managed by IoT. From agricultural development to aircraft advances, each industry is excited about the possibilities of embedding the internet of things in their products and services. Only time will tell what the future of the Internet of Things holds, but everyone is talking about it and focusing on this new era.
