In "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee, the jury finds Tom Robinson guilty of raping Mayella Ewell because of the racial prejudices and biases that exist in Maycomb County. Tom, a Black man, is falsely accused of rape by Mayella, a white woman, and despite a lack of evidence and inconsistencies in Mayella's testimony, the jury convicts Tom because they are unwilling to believe the word of a Black man over that of a white woman. The trial reveals the deep-seated racism that exists in the town, which ultimately leads to Tom's unjust conviction.
