Why does Jim run away?

Jim, the character in "Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" by Mark Twain, runs away due to his desire for freedom and to escape the shackles of slavery. As an enslaved African American, Jim yearns for a life where he can control his own destiny, away from the oppressive system that treats him as property. When he learns that he is at risk of being sold and separated from his family, Jim decides to embark on a perilous journey down the Mississippi River with Huck Finn, seeking refuge and ultimately aiming to reach a free state where he can experience autonomy and a chance at a better life.
