Myrtle Wilson is a character in F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel The Great Gatsby. She is the wife of George Wilson, and is having an affair with Tom Buchanan, one of the novel's main characters. Myrtle is portrayed as a shallow and materialistic character, who is obsessed with the idea of social status and wealth. She sees her affair with Tom as a way of escaping her drab and unhappy life, and is willing to overlook his flaws and mistreatment of her in order to maintain the illusion of a glamorous and exciting lifestyle. Myrtle's death, which occurs when she is hit by a car driven by Daisy Buchanan, is a pivotal moment in the novel, and sets off a chain of events that ultimately leads to the downfall of several characters.
