In "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight," Gawain leaves Arthur's court on New Year's Day to embark on his quest to find the Green Knight. The Green Knight had challenged any knight to strike him with his own axe, provided that the challenger agrees to receive a return blow in one year and one day. Gawain takes up the challenge and strikes the Green Knight, who then picks up his head and tells Gawain to meet him at the Green Chapel in a year's time to receive his return blow. Gawain sets out on his journey shortly after, determined to keep his word and honor the terms of the challenge.
