The Trojan War in the Iliad is said to have been sparked by a series of events, but the primary cause can be traced back to a dispute among the Greek gods. The catalyst was the judgment of Paris, a prince of Troy, who was tasked with deciding which of three goddesses – Athena, Hera, and Aphrodite – was the fairest. Paris chose Aphrodite, who promised him the love of the most beautiful mortal woman, Helen, already married to the Greek king Menelaus. Paris abducted Helen, leading to a coalition of Greek forces, including Menelaus and the famed warrior Achilles, assembling to retrieve her and avenge the perceived dishonor. Thus, the Trojan War began, lasting for a decade and culminating in the legendary fall of the city of Troy through the infamous wooden horse strategy.
