The Hobbit is a fantasy novel by J. R. R. Tolkien and the prequel to his children's book The Lord of the Rings. It tells the story of a hobbit named Bilbo Baggins who is recruited by a wizard named Gandalf to join a company of dwarves on a quest to reclaim their homeland from Smaug, an enormous dragon.
The novel was first published in 1937 and has been translated into many languages since then. The story is set in Middle Earth, which Tolkien made up as he wrote it. In addition to The Hobbit, there are two other books in the series: The Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion.
