The Lord of the Flies is a 1954 novel by Nobel Prize-winning English author William Golding about a group of British boys marooned on an uninhabited island who try to govern themselves. It was his first novel, and became an international best seller. The book focuses on their descent from civilized behaviour into primitive savagery, allegorizing the ethical choices made by humans when isolated from society.
The novel was published on 30 September 1954 by Faber and Faber in the United Kingdom, with an initial print-run of 8,500 copies. It received almost immediate critical acclaim and won the 1955 James Tait Black Memorial Prize for fiction and the 1957 Somerset Maugham Award for literature.
In 2003, it was ranked at number 70 on the BBC's survey The Big Read.[1] In 2004, it was chosen as one of "America's 100 best-loved novels" by PBS's The Great American Read.[2] In 1998, Modern Library named it one of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century.[3] In 2003, it was listed at number 49 on the BBC's survey The Big Read.[1]
