What Is Jane Eyre About?

Category: Literature
Explanation:

Jane Eyre is a book by Charlotte Bronte. It was published in 1847 and is considered one of the first gothic novels. The story takes place in the 19th century, when England was still a rural country.

The main character of the story is Jane Eyre, who is an orphan and is sent away to study when she's 10 years old. She feels lonely there, but eventually finds friends with whom she shares her love for reading. After some time she decides to become a governess at Thornfield Hall, where she meets Edward Rochester. He falls in love with her and asks her to marry him, but she refuses because he's already married to Bertha Mason.

Mason is insane and locked up in the attic of the house; when their wedding day arrives she escapes from her room and tries to kill Jane Eyre by setting fire on Rochester's bedchamber flooring (which has been set ablaze). Bertha dies, and Jane and Edward eventually marry.
