Anna Karenina is a novel by Leo Tolstoy, first published in serial installments from 1873 to 1877 in the periodical The Russian Messenger. An oft-quoted line from the book is "Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way."
It is regarded as his first true novel, after having written many short stories and novellas. It was later adapted for the stage and made into an opera, which has been performed frequently since 1896. The story of Anna Karenina unfolds against a backdrop of high society in Saint Petersburg and Moscow, with all its intrigues and scandals. Anna's passion for Count Vronsky gradually grows until she breaks her marriage vows to her husband and dashes with Vronsky to Italy, causing scandal among their families and friends. Anna's return to Russia leads to her suicide after Vronsky abandons her.
