In Homer's epic poem The Odyssey, Tiresias is a blind prophet who predicts the future for the hero Odysseus. When Odysseus visits the underworld, Tiresias tells him that he will eventually return to his home in Ithaca after a long and difficult journey. Tiresias warns Odysseus that he will face many trials and tribulations on his journey, but that he must resist the temptation to harm the cattle of the sun god, Helios. If Odysseus disobeys this warning, Tiresias predicts that all of his crew will be killed and that he will return to Ithaca alone and in disgrace. Tiresias also tells Odysseus that he must make amends with the god Poseidon, who is angry with him for blinding his son, the Cyclops Polyphemus. Tiresias's predictions are a central part of the narrative of The Odyssey and are seen as an example of the power of prophecy and the intervention of the gods in human affairs.
