After Caesar's assassination, Brutus and Cassius took control of the republic, but things quickly went wrong.In Act V, Scene 1, Cassius hears the news that the army of the Caesarians has defeated the army of the conspirators at Philippi, and that his own general, Titinius, has been taken captive. Upon hearing this, Cassius became despondent and uncertain, and resolved to kill himself in order to avoid being captured.
