In F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel The Great Gatsby, the character Jay Gatsby dies at the end of the novel, shot by George Wilson, the husband of Myrtle Wilson, who has been killed in a car accident. Gatsby has been in love with Daisy Buchanan, a married woman, for many years and has built up a vast fortune in order to win her back. When Daisy accidentally kills Myrtle with Gatsby's car, Gatsby takes the blame for the accident in order to protect Daisy. Wilson, who has been manipulated by Tom Buchanan, Myrtle's husband, believes that Gatsby is responsible for Myrtle's death and seeks revenge. Gatsby's death is a tragic end to his pursuit of the American Dream and is seen as a commentary on the corruption and excess of the Jazz Age.
