Known as Suryapur meaning the city of the sun god in the 15th century, Surat now is the hub for diamond cutting and polishing and textile industry. The city has come a long way from being an essential and large port city in India to become a central business and industrial centre of the country. Marking its presence felt from ancient to present times, the narrow lanes, ancient monuments and modern infrastructure are what define the city’s urban landscape that instantly attracts tourists towards itself.
Although Surat is known as a commercial hub but still there is quite a lot to explore starting from historical monuments to temples, gardens and scenic beaches. Also to your surprise, it is home to several renowned celebrities like veteran actor Sanjeev Kumar, Farooq Sheikh, Cricketer Hardik Pandya among others.
Your Surat trip should start with visiting city’s oldest structure, Surat Castle. This 16th-century fort is a testimony of Surat’s history that was built to protect the citizens of the city from the constant attack of the invaders.
The most attractive feature of the fort is its structure which comprises 12 meters high battlements and 4 meter thick walls.
Next comes the beautiful temples in Surat which not only stand out for religious importance but also for their architectural excellence. Chintamani Jain Temple is one such example. It is another oldest structure in the city that is about 400 years old. Though the temple looks very simple from outside but as you enter the temple you are ought to get awestruck by its intricate wooden carvings and beautiful vegetable dye paintings.
t’s now time to relax while exploring some European legacy in the city. And Dutch Gardens is the most prominent one. Being part of the Dutch Cemetery, the garden holds historical significance and comprise of huge domes, ancient mausoleums and impressive galleries. When you visit this well-designed garden, do also visit the Anglican Church to witness the 10 feet high decorative cross.
If you want to go deeper into history then visit one of the oldest museums in the city, Sardar Vallabhai Patel Museum. The museum has some significant collections of Mughal and British era that includes miniature paintings, manuscripts, sandalwood, wooden, metal and terracotta antiques. It also boasts of an open-air theatre known as Rangupavan, which could hold 4000 people at a time. It’s a must visit for a history lover.
Your visit to Surat is incomplete if you don’t visit the most iconic landmark of Indian history that is Dandi. The famous Salt March or Dandi march came to an end here during the Namak Satyagraha movement by Mahatma Gandhi. So make sure you spend some time at Dandi beach especially during evening and remember the time of India’s struggle for independence.
The list does not end here; there are many other destinations that you can plan to visit like Swaminarayan temple, Iskcon temple, Ambika Niketan temple, Mughal Sarai, Jagdishchandra Bose Aquarium, Ukai Dam, Swaraj Ashram at Bardoli and Science center.
