Lamp Under a Bushel is a very profound parable within the Bible. In the parable, Jesus states that no one lights a lamp just to hide it. What he he tries to convey is that no person should obscure their goodness, yet instead they should display the works to be glorified by God. Lights should not be hidden, in fact, they will be eventually exposed to represent the goodness and purity of those around. This parable is told in different ways throughout Matthew, Mark, and Luke.
Though they have differences and similarities, there are enough to be noted.
In Matthew, it is stated that instead of putting a lamp Under bowl that it should be displayed on a table. “ In the same way, let your light shine so others can see it. Then they will see the good things you do. And they will bring glory to your Father who is in heaven.” It is illustrated as if God wants your talents and abilities to be openly portrayed to the world and not hidden, so that God will be glorified.
Similarly, the parable is paralleled in Mark and Luke.
The parable can be conceived as different in each gospel, but they still have the same meaning behind them. Jesus explains that anything hidden will be exposed. This is different, since he is directly stating that your talents will be exposed as opposed to you opening up about them yourself. “ Do you bring in a lamp to put it under a large bowl or a bed? Don’t you put it on its stand? What is hidden is meant to be seen.
And what is put out of sight is meant to be brought out into the open.” Jesus proclaims this this to his listeners, hoping they will listen to his preachings and not be ashamed to illustrate themselves to the world.
In Luke, the parable is thought of the same way, yet spoken differently. “ No one lights a lamp and hides it. No one puts it under a bowl. Instead, they put a lamp on its stand. Then those who come in can see the light.” The key concept trying to be displayed is to reveal and not conceal. It may be inferred that Jesus is relating himself to the light. This parable has a insightful message behind it, stating to not hide yourself for who you are, but to display your talents and abilities to the world as you are.
