For me, like everyone, I have certain ways in which I learn best. Bodily-Kinesthetic is my strongest intelligence. I learn best by doing hands-on activities, it helps me remember the information. When I relate information to something I did I immediately remember it better. Another one of my strengths is Intrapersonal intelligence. I like spending time alone reflecting on different things. I also like studying and working alone, being able to do things at my own pace helps me get things done.
On the other hand, Interpersonal intelligence is another one of my strengths. I like to understand people and show empathy to help them. Working in groups helps me understand the assignment and being able to hear others opinions and ideas helps me even more. Using these strengths, I can develop a study plan to help me become the best student I can be. There is another self-assessment that helps you understand the type of student you are and the type you want to become.
This assessment is called the Discovery Wheel. It is divided into 12 different categories with eight characteristics in each category. You score yourself on weather that characteristic is always true for you (five) or never true for you (one). The highest score for each category being 40 and the lowest being eight. However, one category is not better than the other. The Discovery Wheel is more a picture of how you see yourself as a student. With that, we are bias toward our own success so the discovery wheel isn’t 100% accurate and it’s not a permanent picture of who you are.
Although it’s helpful in showing how you see your strengths and weaknesses as a student and will help you use your strengths to improve your weaknesses. After taking the Discovery Wheel assessment it showed me my strengths and weaknesses. My top two strengths were Health and Note Taking. Meaning I do things that keep my body healthy for my own sake, and I take efficient notes that identifies the important material. Another one of my strengths was Purpose, meaning I know I’m responsible for my life and make changes to my plans as I change and grow. Motivation being tied with Purpose was my other highest strength. I’m open to new ways that will improve my success and I remind myself the importance my education and adjust accordingly.
My weaknesses or areas I need to improve in are Reading, Thinking, and Planning. With my weakness being Reading it means, I don’t preview and review the reading, I’m not alert while reading a textbook and I don’t ask myself questions while reading. Another weakness being Planning means that when I make plans I don’t stick to them and give myself enough time to finish things. Thinking is another area I need to improve on, meaning I don’t use effective brainstorming methods to help me get unstuck during problems, and I don’t detective common errors in logic. To improve my Reading skills, I will use my strength in note taking and take effective notes as I’m reading. I will also use my strength in knowing Purpose to improve my Thinking methods. To do so if I’m stuck on a project I will ask others for ideas and use and revise those different viewpoints to help with the project. My other weakness, Planning, can be strengthened by Motivation. Starting to set goals and prioritize my plans will motivate me to accomplish those goals and get results I want.
There are many ways to make yourself a successful college student. Although it may take some trial and error to see what works best for you. But if you create a study plan using your strengths and how you learn best it will make the process a lot simpler. For my study plan I’m going to be using ideas from: The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator Test, the Theory of Multiple Intelligences, and strengths from the Discovery Wheel. Since my strongest intelligence is Bodily-Kinesthetic, when studying I’m going to write or type information several times to help me better remember it. Also I’m going to be saying the information out loud to help with memorization. Since I’m going to be doing my studying alone because I’m strong in Intrapersonal intelligence, I won’t have to worry about bothering others. This also ties in my preference of Introversion according to the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. When I’m studying alone I’m also going to set goals for myself to help me get things done on time. This will help me keep track of what I need to get done first. In addition, I’m going to use my preference of Feeling, by choosing courses that relate to what I want and when and how to study that will best benefit me and my goals the most. The Feeling preference and my strength in Purpose tie together. I know I am responsible for my own success and I’m going to use that to drive me to do my best. Since my other strength is Note Taking I’m going to take effective notes as needed. Identifying the important information and writing it in my own words to better understand. Doing all these things will help improve my study habits and make me a better student overall.
