“The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas” is a short story by Ursula K. Le Guin that was first published in 1973. The story is set in the fictional utopia of Omelas, whose prosperity and happiness is based on the continual sacrifice of a single child. Those who cannot bear the knowledge of this child’s suffering eventually leave Omelas, disappearing into the surrounding mountains.
