Machinal is a play by Sophie Treadwell, first performed in 1928. It tells the story of a young woman, known only as Young Woman, who is trapped in a loveless marriage and an oppressive society. She eventually snaps and commits murder. The play is based on the real-life case of Ruth Snyder, who was executed in 1928 for killing her husband.
