Essays on Life As We Knew It

“Life As We Knew It” is a novel by Susan Beth Pfeffer. The novel is narrated by sixteen-year-old Miranda, who lives in Bear Branch, Pennsylvania. Her mother is a stay-at-home mom, and her father is a high school guidance counselor. She has two younger brothers, Jared and Matt.
The novel begins with Miranda’s reflection on the asteroid that is set to hit the moon, causing the moon to be pulled closer to Earth. This will cause worldwide tsunamis, volcanoes, and earthquakes. Her family begins to prepare for the disaster, stocking up on food and supplies.
As the disaster unfolds, Miranda’s family struggles to survive. They lose power and running water. Food becomes scarce. Miranda’s mother becomes pregnant, and Miranda must help deliver the baby. Jared becomes severely ill, and Miranda must care for him.
The novel ends with Miranda’s family still alive, but barely. They are struggling to find food and shelter, and Miranda is unsure if they will make it.
