The novel tells the story of a young woman, Connie Reid, who is married to an older man, Clifford Chatterley. Clifford is an aristocrat who is paralyzed from the waist down and is unable to have sex. Connie is frustrated by this and begins an affair with the gamekeeper, Oliver Mellors.
The novel is set in the early 20th century and is a critique of the British class system. It is also a story of female sexuality and empowerment.
