Stoneman is a minor character in the book Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. He is a fireman and one of Montag’s colleagues. He is often portrayed as unthinking and aggressive, blindly following orders and enjoying burning books.
Stoneman is one of Montag’s fellow firemen, who works alongside Black, another fireman. Stoneman and Black are more or less interchangeable in the novel, representing the faceless, unthinking enforcers of the society’s anti-book laws. Stoneman’s mechanical dedication to his duties without question or emotion demonstrates the dehumanizing effect of the society’s repression of individual thought and critical thinking. His character, like that of Black, serves to mirror the emptiness of a life devoid of intellectual curiosity or personal growth.
