The story is set in Dublin, Ireland and follows the life of a young woman named Eveline. She is 19 years old and lives at home with her father and two sisters. Her mother died when she was young, and her father is abusive, both physically and emotionally. Eveline has a job as a sales clerk, but she is not happy with her life. She is in love with a man named Frank, who is moving to America to start a new life. Eveline is torn between staying in Dublin with her family and going with Frank to America. In the end, she decides to stay in Dublin and does not go with Frank.
