Three-Act Plot Analysis
ACT ONE
The story opens at the funeral of Anowa’s mother, who died when Anowa was eight years old. Her father, Oguaa, is a renowned chief in their small village in Ghana. Anowa is now a young woman, and she is being forced by her father to marry a man she does not love. When she refuses, her father sends her away to live with her aunt.
ACT TWO
Anowa returns to her village after several years away and finds that her father has died. She is now free to do as she pleases, and she quickly becomes involved with a young man named Kofi Ako. Kofi is from a wealthy family, and he is not interested in Anowa’s dowry. However, he does want to marry her, and Anowa agrees.
The couple moves to Accra, the capital city, and they have two children. Anowa is not happy with her life, however, and she begins to have an affair with a man named Kwame. Kofi eventually discovers the affair and divorce
