Everyone is Alike: Culture and Rules in the Movie Divergent

Categories: Divergent

“We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, ensure domestic Tranquility…do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.” The preamble which was written by our founding fathers was established in order to have regulations for everyone to follow in order to have a perfecting Union. The preamble is what every citizen needs to follow if they are living in the United States of America. Rules and regulations are created in order to have equality and fundamental rights.

Without them our nation would be chaotic and disorganized. Rules pertain to specific cultures and a culture I will be describing is the one in the movie Divergent.

During the movie we see a different type of cultural relativism that portrays having the government separated into five groups or factions and each faction has their own specific norms and values. These norms and values for the people living in that world are to take a test at the age of eighteen in order to see what faction they belong to.

Many times, this results in leaving your family and the faction you were born into. Being in a certain faction plays a big role in these early adult lives because it’s their new life and describes who they are. The main character Tris is seen to break a lot of her norms resulting in sanctions against herself and loved ones. Tris has to fight for her life in order to save herself and everyone else who is divergent.

Being divergent in the time present in the movie was a dangerous trait to have and if caught the consequences were fatal. A normal taboo throughout the movie was the find divergent people and kill them. There were many types of ways to find divergent, but Tris managed to learn how to avoid getting caught. Many of the value clusters such as education, hard work and success were also portrayed during the movie when Tris and her team wanted the villagers to know what is happening and how they are going to help them.

Social-conflict paradigm can be used to analyze the movie. During the movie we have the five factions; candor, dauntless, erudite, amity and abnegation. Each of these factions display who they are and what they do for the government. The governments purpose to dividing the people into these factions was to create peace and establish a perfect nation. As the movie goes on we can see how the government starts to turn against their own people in order to try and find divergent which results in factions falling apart. Everyone is left clueless in what they should do next. The people are no longer divided and start to create another new world creating their own rules and overthrowing the old government and its people. The government are the only ones who see divergent as bad people and only care to kill them. After the war ended new regulations were slowly coming together excluding factions and having everyone live together.

After watching the movie, we can see that rules are everywhere but only apply to those who live in that specific culture. Rules are created for equality and to establish a better living. Even though cultures are all different there are many similarities in how we all live and without rules there would be to regulations in life. Divergent explains what kind of culture we would live in if we broke government rules and became on our own. There were rules that needed to be followed but soon were broken and created a whole new problem for the people. Culture also plays a big role in our society because it represents our history and background without even having to explain to people. We are all educated enough to know where these cultures originate from which help understand what kind of lives people are living and compare it to our own.
