There are many problems in this world, one of them being education. Now just the simple word “education”, means lots of things. Whether it be slang, formal, familiar, or much more. In Webster’s Dictionary, education means “the field of study that deals mainly with methods of teaching and learning in school”. According to Business Insider, a survey on the world’s greatest problems taken by Millenials, 15.9% of people said that lack of education was the greatest problem there was. There are too many rural places in the world that are too poor to afford schools or afford teachers or even simple afford textbooks or a simple shelter to be taught at.
My standpoint on this topic is that everyone, no matter their culture or financial status should have the opportunity to learn, and grow as a human being.
NEA’s “Education for All” movement, stated that no country has sustained economic growth without near-universal education. Education has been proven to reduce poverfunded government and inequality and produces a foundation for civic participation.
Also, according to NEA’s “Education for All” movement, worldwide 72 million children in primary schools are not active in their studies, with 60% of them being girls. Essentially means they don’t have a place to learn at. School is hard, and depending on your resources, it can be even harder. Many kids have learning disabilities, social disabilities, behavioral disabilities, and even significant and severe life-changing disabilities such as down syndrome, cerebral palsy, and autism. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), “In 2016 the amount of children ages ranging from 2 - 17 years old in the U.S.
that have the attention and learning disorder “Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder” aka ADHD, is estimated to be 6.1 million children. Which was 4.4 million in 2003, and in 2007 was increased to 5.4 million. Which is approximately 9.4 % of the minor population (65 million)”. “ADHD affects the behavioral control in children along with adults. The way it occurs is when the dopamine in the brain does not react properly with the neurotransmitters and other chemicals in the brain, the pleasure and reward section of the brain is less active, causing the child’s mood/behavior regulation to become unbalanced.” It doesn’t stop there. Of children that have ADHD, 65% of that 6 million have another disorder/disability with it. 52% of children have a secondary behavioral problem, and 50% have either depression or anxiety. With all of this information we have now, the question is, how do teachers work and teach these children with these problems? Sometimes they really can’t. Forbes states that “The ideal teacher, would consist of, a passion for their field of work/subject, a deep knowledge of their subject, an idea for how they want to control and shape the students in their classroom, and the ability the nourish and care for the students while being patient and adapting to the variety of learning disabilities and learning styles”. Basically what they are trying to explain is that order to have a perfect teacher, that can teach everyone, would be close to impossible. Schools in the U.S. specifically don’t pay their teachers enough as is, imagine if the schools had the budgets to pay their staff a reasonable salary. The skill of the teachers isn’t the only piece of the puzzle that is education. The environment the children are in too. Bullying is a giant factor in a child’s education. In a study conducted by Cyberbullying Research Center, on a country scale, 18.5% (4,750,000) students skipped school in the previous year because they were being bullied and did not feel safe at school.
It will always be a problem. Education will never be perfect. Many people can, will say, that why not increase the budget for schools, since it is a government fundedgovernment-fund that facility. The problem is that it would lead to a tax increase, and the community would be furious. Also, some people would ask why can’t money be donated to rural areas and have schools built there. The reason is because there will be students with the lack of transportation, the lack of resources to complete assignments, and overflowing/overcrowding in schools. No matter what someone’s idea for a solution is, the chances of it not being reasonable are low.
The only thing we can do is to collaborate with other nations and organizations to create places for children to learn, feel safe, and accomplish their goals with their peers. The solution for that issue may not be clear but it is certain that someone soon will have a temporary answer for a permanent problem.
