Ecology is a very important and urgent issue today. This word means the relation of plants and living creatures to each other and to their environment. Nowadays, this relation is damaged. Our environment suffers from ecological problems, such as: air and water pollution, rainforest destruction, extinction of plants and animals. If there is a problem – there should be some solutions as well.
To begin with, one of the biggest ecological problem is water pollution. Water is being polluted by waste products from factories.
Water pollution affects marine ecosystems, wildlife health, and human well-being. The answer to solving pollution is to make changes in our thinking, our daily habits and pay more attention to the types of products we consume. For example, we need to clean up rivers by picking up litters and stop polluting them.
Moreover, people could avoid plastics, when it is possible. What is more, another problem related to pollution is when pollutants are constanly being released into the atmosphere is called air pollution.
There are lots of things that each of us can do to stop being a part of the problem — and start becoming a part of the solution. The first good step is to take action in your personal life to reduce your contribution to air pollution. For example, reduce the amount of time you spend in the car and start using „green“ cars, public transport, cycling.
Secondly, one of the most important ways to help plants and animals which are facing extinction to survive is to protect their habitats permanently in national parks, nature reserves or wildlife areas.
There they can live without too much interference from humans. It is also important to protect habitats outside reserves, namely: on farms and along roadsides. What is more, if you have friends who live on farms, encourage them to keep patches of bush as wildlife habitats and to leave old trees standing, especially those with hollows suitable for nesting animals.
Some areas have groups of people who look after local lands and nature reserves. They do this by removing weeds and planting local indigenous species in their place. You could join one of these groups, or even start a new one with your parents and friends. Ask your local parks authority or council for information. Moreover, by removing rubbish and weeds and replanting with indigenuos you will allow the local bush to regenerate gradually. This will also encourage native animals to return.
Another, ecological problem is rainforest destruction. One of the main causes of this is logging for timber. Millions of hectares are cut down every year, often illegally. The most valuable wood is taken and not replaced. Landless people move in along the new logging roads. However, one of the biggest contributors to rainforest destruction is that they are often located in developing countries. As a result, the forests lack protection and are in danger. A tragic effect of the loss of the rainforest is the extinction of plants and animals that could provide us with food, medicine or valuable products. Thousands of species disappear each year. This leads to a poorer world with less biodiversity. In order to escape from this problem we have to stop cutting trees.
In conclusion, I would like to say that there are a lot of solutions that can stop destruction of our earth but nobody else is going to do it for us. Just we have to start thinking about the future of mankind. We can cut carbon pollution by reducing our dependence on fossil fuels and increasing our use of clean, renewable energy so as to breathe fresh air, stay healthy and enjoy our life. Also, we need more national parks, reserves in order to save endangered species. We have to stop being so greedy and so shortsighted. I believe that everything is still in our hands.
Thirty percent of the world's population is under the age of eighteen, according to UNEP, which is why educating children and young adults about environmental problems is crucial to long-term success. This will help them foster a sense of responsibility and "proactive citizenship," so that when they become adults they will make choices that help the environment rather than harm it. Many schools, however, do not currently teach their students about environmental issues. Integrating environmental education into current science classes or teaching environmental science as a separate discipline is one of the best ways to educate children and teens about environmental problems, particularly if the classes involve some sort of "hands-on" learning, like starting a garden or caring for an animal.
