American Controversial Politics Today

American politics at this day and age can be quite controversial. There have been many changes in our government in the last decade and watching it all unfold has always been interesting. I believe that the most important issue in American politics today is border control, the alleged reason we are in a government shutdown. A record breaking 23 days, as of January 13, 2019, this partial government shutdown over border control and border security issue has US citizens seeing how much all of this really affects them.

US immigration policy seems to be the focused topic in politics recently. During President Donald Trump’s term, American immigration policy has been questioned and in the works of being changed.

Trump addresses border control as a necessity for our country since elections, stating that a “wall” must be built to protect our country and “Make American Great Again”. Many democrats strongly opposed of the idea of such drastic border security. Once congress didn’t have enough democratic votes, President Trump began his threats.

Trump went to social media site twitter.com to tweet July 29, 2018, “I would be willing to “shut down” government if the Democrats do not give us the votes for Border Security, which includes the Wall! Must get rid of Lottery, Catch & Release etc. and finally go to system of Immigration based on MERIT! We need great people coming into our Country!” (Trump)

A government shutdown is when Congress doesn’t approve a federal budget so all nonessential functions of the US will close until they can agree on said budget.

In this case President Donald Trump is looking for Congress to approve at $5.7 billion budget to build a wall on the border of Mexico. This shutdown is the third to take place in 2018. An article written by HuffPost reporters, Dave Jamieson and Amanda Terkel, discusses the history of shutdowns. They talk about how even though there have been three technical shut downs in 2018 none of them resulted in any furloughs the way this current one did. Since 1976 there had only been a “hand full” of shutdowns that lead to workers without pay. (Jamieson and Terkel HuffingtonPost)

As a result of the partial government shut down there have been around 800,000 federal workers missed at least one paycheck and are looking at other financial alternatives to relieve the stress. Many are taking out loans, applying for unemployment and looking towards other options and sources of income so close to the holidays. Since federal functions are not being funded there are roughly 380,000 federal employees that have been furloughed, which means they are sent home and docked pay until the shut down ends, and 420,000 are still required to work but are not being paid.

In conclusion in my opinion the border control government shutdown is the most important issue in American politics today. American immigration policy is in the process of being changed but not without a few million dollars to help President Trump move forward. Because of lack of democratic votes in Congress, Trump came to the decision of a partial government shut down; almost as an act of protest. Not only are government shut downs expensive, but they effect US citizens in many ways. The thousands of US federal workers that functions were impacted were forced into furlough or other options such as unemployment, looking for a way to make do during this tough time financially. America’s border control issue isn’t just about our immigration policy anymore, it’s a fight that is affecting thousands of US federal workers and their families.
