Vladimir Lenin and Joseph Stalin

Joseph Stalin was a feared dictator of Russia, who rose to power at the expense of others. He wasn’t always a ruthless Russian dictator. He was just like any other kid but didn’t go to school, but he did some terrible deeds in his life. He killed and hurt others so that he could thrive and be successful in his own life and so that theirs were miserable.

Josef’s childhood consisted of him working and his schooling. As a child, he didn’t attend school until he was older.

He was born with the name Josef Vissarionovich Jughashvili on December 18 1878 in Gori, Georgia. It was a small town in the well-known Russian Empire. He grew up as an only child. His father was a shoemaker, and came home at night after work and beat Joseph. His mother was a laundress. Around the age of six Joseph contracted a disease called “Smallpox”, which left scars on his face his whole life.

When he was helping his dad one day he broke his left arm when Joseph was pulling a carriage for his father. As a result of his injury, his arm was deformed. As a child, his mother was a Christian and wanted him to grow up in the faith. In 1888 he was enrolled in a church school in Gori. Throughout his years there, he did very well in all of his classes. He did so well that he earned a scholarship to Tiflis Theological Seminary in 1894. Just after completing his years at the seminary, he was asked to join a secret organization that supported Georgian Independence from Russia.

As an adult, Joseph didn’t return home because he was focused on his job for the organization. As a side job, we was a clerk at a store and also tutored seminary students. In 1901 he was arrested for assisting in a labor strike and was sent to Siberia. As he kept assisting in strikes he was arrested and sent to jail and is where he earned his nickname “Stalin”, which means steel in Russian. By being in the organization he wanted to be like his bosses Vladimir Lenin for his strength and Leon Trotsky. He gained support and money by robbing. Stalin is famous for once stealing 250,000 rubies from the Tiflis Bank(which is equal to 3.4 million U.S dollars). In February 1917 the Russian Revolution began.

Joseph Stalin did most of his work underground for the next couple of years. In 1919 Lenin placed Stalin on the first committee of the Bolshevik party. A couple of years later in November, the Bolsheviks gained power and resources in Russia. Then in 1922, the Bolsheviks founded the Soviet Union and Lenin was their first leader he helped Stalin move up the political ladder. Throughout the following years, Stalin became secretary of the Bolsheviks, this allowed him to appoint people to government jobs and grow a base of political support. When Lenin died in 1924, many men were fighting for his position, but Stalin overpowered them because of his political power. In 1925 he gained much more support which was enough for him to become dictator of the Soviet Union.

Joseph Stalin started his terror in the mid-1920s when he made a five-year plan to transform the Soviet Union into an industrial powerhouse. Stalin publicly killed those who opposed his plan. In 1930 he started the Great Purge, which was secret groups that got “rid” of those who were a threat to the Communist Party. Then Joseph Stalin and German leader Adolf Hitler signed a nonaggression pact. From there Stalin started to annex parts of Poland, Romania, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. Then he invaded Finland and there joined allied forces to strengthen the Soviet Union. But Stalin didn’t slow down there, he led the soviets to a nuclear age. But as he got older he grew paranoid and died on March 5, 1953 at the age of 74 after suffering a stroke.
