(Oxford English Dictionary) In a commercial sense, or more specifically in terms of a venue, the infrastructure comprises of the basic amenities available on site: water, electricity, sanitation as well as its transport network and lines of communication such phone lines and fibre optics etc. The infrastructure of a venue is a severe limitation of what is possible at a given site as huge problems arise when events are staged which exceed the capabilities of the available infrastructure. Silverstone Circuit - multipurpose motorsport venue

Silverstone is a multipurpose motorsport venue. It is open most weekdays for use by the driving school which provides various courses for Joe public. It is also in use for the majority of weekends, particularly in the summer for motorsport race meetings catering for many different classes from single seaters to Touring cars with its show case being the Fosters British Formula One Grand Prix. The Formula One circus as it is known is a huge spectacle with the transformation that takes place on site both on the day and the lead up to the event. Throughout the two weeks in the build up to race weekend the team vehicles start to arrive.

Each team has its own fleet with several Lorries carrying the cars and the related spares, as well as equipment such as tools and the likes. Each team will also bring with them several hospitality vehicles in which drivers and team alike can rest in when they have the time. These vehicles are also used to entertain sponsors and other important guests to maximise their enjoyment of the Grand Prix experience to encourage them to look favourably on the team. Outside of the individual teams there are Lorries showcasing and selling consumables such as the tyre companies who are highly involved with the racing action.

The Governing body, the FIA will also have their entourage of officials, timing equipment etc and of course the vehicles in which they arrive. Among the rest of the menagerie of essential staff include the media who will have an absolutely huge presence as well as all the other catering and entertainment facilities and staff that is all drafted in for the spectacle weekend. Last but not least there are the 90,000 spectators which arrive over the race weekend. As you might imagine this phenomenal volume of traffic severely hampers traffic flow in the local area on that weekend.
