Ishikawa

Ishikawa is one of the leaders of total quality management philosophies. He implemented total quality management activities in Japan. Mr. Ishikawa done a lot of work in the research field and it was published. His work was mostly about quality control. He was also work as a professor in Tokyo University and also done a lot researches.

Mr. Ishikawa tells in his Total quality management philosophy that education is most important for the quality. If you have education you have quality.

He also talked about the consumer requirements. He says that if you have quality in your work you do not need to make product inspection step. He also suggest that control quality is the responsibility of all from the top to bottom , a single man in an organization cannot take quality alone , he needs his subordinates and seniors help to take quality. He also said that senior Management should polite with their workers so they work well and make long term objective but firstly quality should be in the product.

Juran

The very first person who writes about the cost of poor quality was Juran.

Juran's cross functional management approach consist on 3 steps:

  1. Quality planning. It is about to create the awareness about the goals.
  2. Quality control. It is the process where methods developed to test the product quality and also make improvements in them.
  3. Quality improvement. Quality improvement states that improvement should be continuous and management praise and appreciate the employees when things done right. He also gives 3 steps to progress.

In these three steps he says that full fill or achieve those standard which you make .Also take training programs in the organization and your senior management should have leadership qualities .Basically Juran gives 10 steps to quality. He says in these 10 steps that awareness is necessary about quality and it is most important to give training to your employees first and also tells them results so they know about their weaknesses and strengths.

Deming

Demin gives 14 points for management which are basically guidelines for the managers. He says that you can take quality in your product when you do not have fear heart. He also talks about workload of the employees. He thinks that workload cannot take quality and numeric quotas and work standard should be discussed with the employees.

Basically these guidelines tells that how managers can behaved with their employees and ultimately quality comes.

Crosby

Crosby gives four absolute of quality management and these are following:

  1. First absolute. It tells that quality is agreement to requirements
  2. Second absolute. It states that quality is precluding
  3. Third absolute. It states that standards to check performance should be zero
  4. Fourth absolute. It is the final absolute which states that measurements of quality is the price of non-agreement.

He also gave the concept of Zero Defects, which is a method that states people should closely check details and Dodge errors. If you do this your products would be zero defect.

Crosby also gives 14 steps to improve quality. Basically in these fourteen points he declares that quality awareness is necessary and also monitors the problems and immediately corrects them. He also said that training is necessary and also aware employees about zero defect program. Lastly and the most important point is to recognize and praise the employees.

Taguchi

Taguchi talks about the quality control in the manufacturing industries. Engineer’s takes his concepts and design their programs and processes. Taguchi philosophy based on three fundamental concepts which are following:

  1. Quality is important for the product not for the inspection
  2. If you want to achieve the quality then your target should be minimum so it can controllable in environmental factors.
  3. The quality cost is the function of deviation.
  4. Basically, Taguchi gives the statistical methods for the total quality management.

Common points

In the philosophy of these five gurus many things /points were common. Ultimately, these five gurus wants to give the same concepts but with the different angle.

The common points which I noted in all these were following:

  1. Educate employees about quality
  2. Train the seniors how to behave with the employees
  3. Quality should be in product, not in the inspection
  4. Training is necessary for employees whenever they need
  5. Awareness is most important for the customers as well as for the employees
  6. Recognition and appreciation is important for the employees.

Applications

Today total quality management applications used in the academic libraries. TQM techniques used to improve the academic libraries system and services. Now total quality management is identified as the strategies of the organization. Through TQM organizations knows about the culture and the customer satisfaction.

In India, at Airline industry they implement total quality management concepts and then they conclude that after implementing the TQM application they observe that everyone is involved in the organization from the top to bottom and even the customers. Total quality management is also used in education. It helps to industries, organizations and even for the individuals.
