Maynard Evans High School Gospel Choir Director's Impact on Future Education

There are many clubs and organizations that I am involved in and hold a lot of leadership positions in but the organization that I have love for and have changed me the most is being the Choir Director of the Maynard Evans High School Gospel Choir. I took this position of Choir Director at the beginning of my senior year as my senior project. As the Choir Director, I do not only teach gospel music to young teens who aspired to get closer to get to God by singing but I help to overall better themselves as a person.

While attending a school, like Maynard Evans High School, you are automatically labeled and a held to meet a standard of failure in life. However, I try to teach my Gospel Choir members that even though we are placed in a community where labels make you, who you are, who always have the final say and that you can all change your life.

As I am trying to guide for these students and somewhat a mentor, I am usually the one who is learning something. Every Wednesday, when it is time for rehearsal I gain patience. My Choir Director is always saying that I sound more like her every day. Since working with the Gospel

Choir, I have more patience and more respect for people who work with kids every day, like teachers. Before I became the Choir Director of the Maynard Evans High School Gospel Choir, I took my teachers for granted and did not understand their purpose, besides teaching me a subject I probably would not think of using the day.

However, my teachers have been preparing my teachers have been preparing me for the moment. It sounds cliché but I did not understand the purpose of my teacher until I was the one teaching. Until I had to yell and tell a student to sit down or stop talking. My teachers taught me how to be empathic and my Gospel Choir members have taught me the life lesson of patience. Even though it took me until my senior year and the responsibility of over thirty teens to get it I did.

My goals after high school is to go to college and major in music that focuses on management/business, recording arts, production, and performance. I want to major in something that touches on all those aspects because I want to eventually start my own music label, “Christians Ona Mission, Overpowering Negativity", or "COM'ON Ministries.” With COM'ON Ministries being my own music label, I will be able to give young adults that have a passion for music but need guidance in the industry, the opportunity to do so. Through COM'ON Ministries I will be able to accomplish my lifetime goal of promoting a positive, Christian environment for young adults, to not only be able to display their talents but also grow their spiritual connection. I taking the role as Choir Director was not a coincidence but my mission working in progress. That is why I hold this position so dear to me because it is not a way for me to get community service hours but the seeds that plant my life.
