Frank Lloyd Wright: Inspited by Nature

Frank Lloyd Wright was American Architect and writer. He was one of the Godfathers of 20th century architecture. He was known for his ways such as his “Prairie styles” of building. Frank didn’t start with a rich and wealthy family. It all started on June 8 1867 in the Richland Center in Wisconsin. He grew up loving architecture.

His mother knew that her first born was going to be an architect. She had put engravings on his nursery to inspire him to be one.

Their family moved a lot from United States. They have moved from Wisconsin to Weymouth, Massachusetts. They struggled financially, so they went back to Wisconsin. By the age of 14, his Parents had divorced.

Frank attended high school at Madison high. After high school, he had attended the University of Wisconsin. He had left without getting much, but got an honorary doctorate of fine arts. After college, he went in employment and found a job in architectural detailing with Silsbee.

He felt underappreciated only earning eight dollars a week so he quit. He then worked for detailing beers, Clay, and Dutton.

Wright had later joined Silsbee again, but had quit because he thought his work was better. So he had joined the Adler and Sullivan firm. He had been working on some outside projects and met this new girl named Catherine Tobin. Frank has been working on these independent works but then Sullivan had found out that he was working behind their backs. This act had gotten him fired from his firm.

The Next time they see each other is in 13 years.

Later in life, Catherine was the left to take care of their six children. She filed for divorce against Frank. Frank had to wait another year till he could marry again. He had married this girl named Maude noel which didn’t even last a year due to a morphine addiction. During their Marriage, Anna, franks mother, died in 1893. His problems would only get worse from here on out.

In his Taliesin home, He had faced problems with this guy by the name of John Carlton. He had been hired as a male servant. John had been planning to attack the building that frank wright had built. John had burned the house down with also killing his wife, children and the fellow Taliesin workers. After the attack, he had tried swallowing hydrochloric acid. He had did this to try killing himself. Frank was devastated by the traumatic event that had occured.

Later in his career, he had made beautiful pieces of architecture. He was the one who built the suburban development around Broadacre City. He had also built Usonian style houses to represent the domestic life in america. At this day and age servants were obsolete in households. He would also design famous building such as Fallingwater, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, and the price tower. Which are all landmarks till this day.

Personally I had visited Fallingwater this past summer with my moms friends. I was intrigued by the way it was built on top of a waterfall. He was known for his way to incorporate nature and the environment in his architecture. He had built everything in a unique way that it was beautiful. I had also notice that roofs were like 6 feet which is small. I truly believe that frank was very different in the way he makes his designs for his houses or buildings.

He had a lot of personal concepts that he used which separated himself from the others. He had also made a design called prairie houses. These houses used themed element, usually plant form, that are basically repeated in windows, carpets, and other types of fittings. He had also used new material such as precast concrete blocks, glass bricks, zinc cames for leadlight windows, and Pyrex glass tubing. Frank Lloyd Wright was also interested in site and community planning. Franks commissions and theories on urban design started at around the 1900s and continued on until his death.

Wright was also an active dealer in Japanese art. He primarily dealt ukiyo-e woodblock prints. He had used these arts also with his clients designing their house with japanese art. His obsession all started when he visited japan in 1905. Because of his obsession, He had helped build the Art Institute of Chicago. Later on, His haters began accusing him of retouching the art that had bought. This had brought many lawsuits against him which caused him to sell most of his art to repay these lawsuits.

Frank was hospitalized for his abdominal pain on April 4, 1959. He was later operated on on the 6th. While his recovery, he had died at age 91 on April 9, 1959. After his death head faced many problems with him and his wife’s burial. But later on, Frank was accorded much honorary recognition for his lifetime achievements. He had received honorary degrees from several universities and several nations named him as an honorary board member to their national academies of art and architecture. He left a good mark in the world of architecture and will never be forgotten of his works.
