Homer develops Odysseus’s character by showing him as intelligent and valiant. Odysseus is smart because he is a fast thinker in pressuring situations and as we know he is always in intense situations . For example,”But I brought them back, back to the hollow ships, with streaming tears—I forced them, hauled them under the rowing benches, lashed them fast and shouted out commands to my other, steady comrades: ’Quick, no time to lose, embark in the racing ships!'—“ is a quote from when Odysseus and his men got stuck on the land of the lotus eaters.
Odysseus was able to get his men off the island and to safety back on the boat. Even though Odysseus is intelligent he is also very bold. For example, when he and his men started to attack the Cyclops Odysseus managed to get him and his men safely out of the Cyclops cave by attacking the Cyclops which was a very thought out valiant move.
Two words from this excerpt that have strong connotations would be champions and sensible.
Throughout the excerpt you can see that Beowulf is proud to declare that the men he picked out are mighty and strong. However the men are also sensible noble men. For example,”The mighty man had carefully chosen from tribes of the Geats champions, battlers, the best he could find, the acknowledged brave.” This quote shows how highly he expects of his men and how he hand picked every man. “ Against that journey all sensible men said not a word, though he was dear to them, but encouraged such heart, observed the omens.
” Even though the men are strong they are also understanding and acknowledge that they are there to fight with Beowulf. In addition, the two words that have strong connotations is champions and sensible because it shows the good hearted men that were going to a mission. “I understood that the world was nothing: a mechanical chaos of casual, brute enmity on which we stupidly impose our hopes and fears.” This example of figurative language from the excerpt used is personification because it embodies a human beings emotions to something chaotic and mechanical.
He uses this type of figurative language to better divide the literal meaning of words to better incorporate feelings and have more interesting writing. Using this type of writing let’s the reader paint a better picture on there mind about what is going on in the story and helps them connect more to the character.
